  2. 1984 anti-Sikh riots: Centre announces Rs 5L compensation to kin of 3325 victims Zee Media Bureau/Ritesh K Srivastava New Delhi: In a significant move, the Narendra Modi government on Thursday announced compensation of Rs 5 lakh each to be given to the kin of 3325 people killed during anti-Sikh riots in the national capital in 1984. The order was passed by Home Minister Rajnath Singh, who took the decision after a high-level meeting where the issue of compensation to civilian victims of communal, terrorist or Naxal violence was discussed threadbare, a Home Ministry official said. Government also enhanced the compensation to civilian victims of communal, terrorist or Naxal violence from Rs three lakh to Rs five lakh. Till now the next of kin of persons killed or civilians who suffered permanent incapacitation as a result of such violence were paid Rs 3 lakh as per provisions of the Central Scheme for Assistance to Civilian Victims of Terrorist, Communal, Naxal violence since 2008. Assistance would be given to the surviving spouse in case of death or permanent incapacitation of the husband or the wife, as the case may be. However, if both the husband and the wife died in same incident of violence, the family would be entitled to get the assistance, in each case, the official said. Families of the victims would be eligible to get assistance under the scheme even if they have received any other assistance, by way of payment of ex-gratia or any other type of relief from the government or any other source except when a similar scheme is already being implemented by the Central government. Government had disbursed Rs 6.12 crore as compensation to civilian victims in 204 incidents of terrorist, communal and naxal violence in 2011-12 and Rs 3.99 crore to civilian victims in 133 such incidents in 2012-13. No reimbursement could be made to any civilian victims in incidents of terrorist, communal and Naxal violence during 2013-14 and 2014-15 (till July) as the state governments did not send the proposals. Nearly 3325 people were killed in the communal riots triggered by the assassination of former prime minister Indira Gandhi in 1984 by her body guards. http://zeenews.india.com/news/india/1984-anti-sikh-riots-centre-announces-rs-5l-compensation-to-kin-of-3325-victims_1491630.html ਸਾਂਨੂੰ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਨੇ ਸੱਚੀ ਕੁੱਤਾ ਸਮਝਿਆ ਹੋਇਆ | ਪਹਿਰਾ ਦੇਣ ਵਾਲਾ ਕੁੱਤਾ, ਜਦੋਂ ਭੌਂਕੇ ਤਾਂ ਇੱਕ ਅੱਦਾ ਟੁੱਕੜ ਸੁੱਟ ਦਿਓ, ਬਾਕੀ ਸਮਾਂ ਆਪਣੇ ਘਰ ਦੀ ਇਹਨਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਰਾਖੀ ਕਰਾ ਛੱਡੋ | Its clear, they are not going to ever deliver justice, just throw alms at the Sikhs as if we are beggars/dogs.

  4. For want of concrete evidence, a Delhi court on Wednesday acquitted four people, including three retired policemen, of murdering three men during the 1984 anti-Sikh riots here. Acquitting the then station house officer (SHO) of Nangloi, Ram Pal Singh Rana, then assistant sub-inspector Dalel Singh, then head constable Karam Singh, and a man named Satpal Gupta, additional sessions judge Kamini Lau observed: The material and evidence on the record does not bridge the gap between truth and reasonable doubt. The court also noted that the case was based on circumstantial evidence and the investigation had not been conducted professionally in the manner it ought to have been. It further said even the witnesses who should have been the eyes and ears of the court had failed to support the prosecution case. They had retracted from their earlier statements, it observed, adding that there was little that the state or the courts could do; and to shift the entire blame on the prosecution and the investigating agency would be highly unfair when the prosecution witnesses, the alleged victims on whose assertions the case has been registered, are themselves inconsistent and do not support their earlier versions. Noting with regret that there was little it could do in the absence of more proof, the court said it could not cull out a favorable judgment for the victims on the basis that this was a special case. Whether, it is an ordinary crime or a crime emanating due to communal frenzy, law does not make any distinction either in leading of evidence or in its assessment and the rule is one and only one namely, if depositions are honest and true and the witness so examined credible then a conviction can be even based on the sole testimony of such a witness, the court said. The three former police officers and Gupta were facing trial for the alleged murder of Sikh men Swaroop Singh, Amrik Singh and Trilochan Singh on the morning of November 2, 1984, at Nangloi in West Delhi. The case was registered on the recommendation of Justice Ranganath Mishra Commission, based on affidavits and statement that Gurbachan Singh, son of victim Swaroop Singh, had submitted in 1991. Prem Chand Jain and Ram Niwas Tunda were other accused; but proceedings against them were dropped when they died during the trial. http://www.hindustantimes.com/punjab/chandigarh/1984-anti-sikh-riots-four-acquitted/article1-1268025.aspx
  5. He made the Sikh men wear bursars. Then, with the help of other Muslims in the neighborhood, he escorted them out of Block 32 and out of Trilokpuri. Meanwhile, the city burned and angry mobs raged through the blocks, pulling out Sikhs from their homes and killing them. Mohd Ali Zaid lived on Block 32 in the East Delhi locality, where the worst carnage happened. Half of the houses on that block belonged to Sikhs and mobs arrived there first, voters list in hand. They knew exactly where to find the Sikhs. When the state media – Doordarshan an All India Radio – announced that Indira Gandhi had been shot dead by her two Sikh bodyguards, chaos descended upon the city, fed by rumors that Sikhs were celebrating the murder by distributing sweets because the then Prime Minister had ordered the army inside the Golden Temple. Angry men wielding swords and knives killed more than 3,000 Sikhs in the three days of the worst carnage the city has ever experienced. “They killed more than 300 Sikhs in Block 32 alone,” Zaida recalled. “I had to help otherwise the guilt would have been too much to bear.” Zaidi owned five plots on the block at the time. At first he sneaked around 25 Sikh men from his neighborhood into his house; he then called a barber around 2:30 am. The Sikh men sat there too shocked and scared to protest. The barber cut their hair and the turbans came off. “We had to do it. There was no other way out,” Zaidi, who relocated to another part of the city in the aftermath of the riots and returned only two years ago. “It was a strange day.” Early next morning, he got bursars from the women in his house and made the men wear them. He then sent them out one by one with bearded Muslim men so as to not arouse suspicion. But he couldn’t save them all. His block looked like a ghost town, with men and women from other parts of the city entering homes, pillaging and looting. Blood was all over, stench from the bodies and the tires was overbearing. No Sikh families ever returned to Block 32. Gurcharan Kaur, a widow whose husband Naik Teja Singh was killed near their house on Block 36, is among the very few Sikh families that chose to stay back. For her, the neighbors who came to their rescue made her stay back. “Who knows where the killers came from? We will never know. Even if we know, justice will never be given. It is men like him (Zaidi) who helped us. In those dark days, goodness prevailed too,” she said. http://www.sikh24.com/2014/09/13/an-account-of-how-mohd-ali-zaid-helped-sikhs-escape-during-1984-delhi-massacre/#.VBwjQ_ldWmA
  6. I noticed the large number of countries that are India's allies are holding Self determination votes or supporting them over the next year. We have Russia who supported Crimea breaking away from Ukraine. Scotland from the UK votes later this year, even Venice in Italy is voting. Quebec in Canada votes from time to time. The countries mentioned are India's friends and often oppose Khalistan to please India, I think they will find it hard to do now.

  8. Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh Amritsar, Punjab: Senior advocate and Aam Aadmi Party leader Harwinder Singh Phoolka has reminded Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) of its promise of formation of SIT for re opening and re investigating 237cases of 1984 Sikh genocide which were closed untraced. “The SAD(B) had fully supported this demand and on May 8th 2013 when SAD (B) president Sukhbir Singh had announced the same while breaking the fast of Nirpreet Kaur , he had stated that SAD (B) would pursue the demand of formation of SIT. In February 2014 the Kejriwal government in Delhi announced the formation of SIT. After the resignation of Kejriwal ,this SIT was first stalled by the UPA government and now it is stalled by the NDA government” Phoolka reportedly while talking to Times of India (TOI). He said NDA government was in power since May to which the SAD(B) was an alliance partner but not even a single step had been taken in securing justice for the victims and punishing the guilty. “The incident is 30 years old. Some of the victims are no longer alive and others victims are getting old. Immediate steps are required to be taken to record the statement of these witnesses” he said . He also wrote a letter to Sukhbir asking him to fulfil his promise made to the Sikhs and make the SIT operational immediately, without any further delay. He said the recent revelations of Daman Singh daughter of former Congress party’s Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had once again revived the wounds of Sikhs. “She had revealed that Manmohan Singh’s house was also attacked by mob in November 1984 in Ashok Vihar area of Delhi. It was Manmohan Singh’s son in law, who happens to be a Hindu, who saved the house from burning when the house was almost set on fire by the mob ” he said adding that she had also admitted that the rioters who attacked the house were known to them. Phooka said in Ashok Vihar area where Manmohan Singh’s house was located 7 Sikhs were killed, 4 Gurdwara were burnt, 5 houses were burnt, 7 shops were burnt and 42 vehicles were burnt. “It’s unfortunate that no one has been punished for all these offences and the cases were closed as untraced” he said. While Obama administration and PM office is preparing to forge a new era of Indo-US economic ties, Sikhs For Justice (SFJ) has initiated a social media campaign in support of its petition to cancel Modi's invitation to the White House. US President Obama has invited PM Modi for a meeting at the White House on September 30. A Facebook advertisement "Sign Petition Stop Obama from hosting Modi {Netanyahu of India}. Don't fund another Israel" sponsored by SFJ has gone viral getting scores of hits every hour. On July 21, SFJ initiated an online petition to the Obama Administration urging to cancel the invitation to PM Modi for his role in 2002 massacre of Muslims in Gujarat. “In June 1984, the BJP instigated the military attack on the Golden Temple, resulting in the massacre of thousands of Sikh pilgrims. In 2008, the BJP orchestrated violence against Christians in Orissa,” the petition alleges. The Facebook ad by rights group targeting Muslims, Sikhs and human rights organizations in the United States urges them to "Sign Petition, Stop Obama". “The fact that world's largest democracy has elected a Prime Minister whose party is known for committing crimes against religious minorities should be a matter of grave concern for the western world”, stated attorney Gurpatwant Singh Pannun legal advisor to SFJ, “United States which has acknowledged the role of Modi in massacre of Muslims should not host him at the White House”, added Pannun. Terming Modi as Netanyahu of India, attorney Pannun further stated that online petition will be an eye opener for Obama Administration which is ignoring the track record of Modi and his party BJP with regard to treatment of minorities for vested US economic interests. "Instead of hosting Modi at White House, President Obama should condemn Modi and ban BJP for perpetrating violence against Muslims, Sikhs and Christirans" says the White House Petition. So far the online petition urging Obama administration to cancel Modi's invitation has received more than 1200 signatures. The petition requires 100,000 signatures by August 20 to qualify for a response by the White House. 11. First of all I don't hold the views of this article merely bringing this to light. Sikh Times it seems is also under false propaganda in one point saying Sant Ji was a gender discriminiser... Thoughts on this article - 5 Myths are also lies and cite Hindustani Times and such other filth.Myth #5: Bhindranwale Survived Operation Bluestar and Is Alive and Well Damdami Taksal is the influential religious school, once located in the village Bhinder5, where Bhindranwale was initially a student and eventually jathedar (head priest). The seminary's current jathedar, Thakur Singh, has continued to maintain that Bhindranwale is still alive.6 According to Lt. Gen. Kuldip Singh Brar, who commanded Operation Bluestar, '[the bodies] of Bhindranwale and Shahbeg were identified by a number of agencies including the police, the I.B. [intelligence Bureau] and militants in our custody.'7 Bhindranwale's brother is also reported to have identified Bhindranwale's body.8 Pictures of what appears to be Bhindranwale's body have been published in at least two widely circulated books.9,10 Whereas there can be little doubt that Bhindranwale is no more, the circumstances of his final moments remain shrouded in mystery. The New York Times reported three distinct versions of Bhindranwale's death. Veteran B.B.C. correspondent Mark Tully relates an incident during Bhindranwale's funeral. Captain Bhardwaj 'on lifting the sheet to make sure it was Bhindranwale [asked] the police why the Sant's [sant is an honorific title analogous to Saint] body was so badly battered.' A police officer replied, 'The extremists broke his bones.'11 At the other end of the spectrum lies Dilbir Singh's account. Dilbir Singh was 'Public Relations Advisor at Guru Nanak Dev University for seven years [and] was with the Sant constantly from 1978 until the last week of his life.' He was also 'at that time a correspondent of the Tribune and formerly of the Patriot.' He stated, 'In the fight Bhindranwale was injured on the right side of his temple. A government doctor verified he was captured alive. He was tortured to death.'12 R.K. Bajaj, a correspondent for Surya magazine, is said to have confirmed that 'he had personally seen a photograph of Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale in army custody.'13 Myth #4: Bhindranwale Was a Man of Religion Without Political Ambition Bhindranwale made repeated claims to the effect that he had no interest in political power, 'If I ever become president of the Akali Dal or the S.G.P.C. [shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee], an M.L.A., a government minister, or a member of parliament . . . I shall deserve a shoe-beating by you.'14,15 In contrast, we have the following examples of Bhindranwale's abundant political aspirations year after year: During the S.G.P.C. elections of 1979, 'Of the forty candidates Bhindranwale put up [for a total of 140 seats], all but four were defeated.'16 'For all his protestations that he was not a politician, Bhindranwale campaigned actively for the Congress in three constituencies' during the 1980 general elections.17 During the 1981 elections to the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (D.S.G.P.C.), 'in an attempt to divide Akali votes, the Congress (I) had asked the A.I.S.S.F. [All India Sikh Students Federation] to put up candidates for the Delhi gurdwaras whose campaign was led by Sant Bhindranwale. No A.I.S.S.F. candidate won.'18 At one point in 1983, the Talwandi-Tohra faction of the Akali Dal got a section of the S.G.P.C. to recommend Bhindranwale for the position of jathedar of the Akal Takht.19 According to India Today, in the months leading up to Operation Bluestar about a third of Longowal's S.G.P.C. members and district Akali Dal presidents had 'defected' to Bhindranwale.20 The Darbar Sahib's Public Relations Officer (P.R.O.) Narinderjit Singh Nanda recalled, 'Bhindranwale told me that within thirty days he was taking over the S.G.P.C.'21 However, given his poor record in electoral politics and a disinclination to play by the rules, he had little incentive to seek formal political office. He was already 'the uncrowned emperor.'22 As articulated by Time magazine, 'Bhindranwale had become so popular he had usurped the Akalis' authority.'23 He wielded more informal power than all of Punjab's formal political players combined and liked the idea of 'keeping all factions chasing his favor [whereby] no faction made a move in Punjab without considering the response it would draw from Bhindranwale.'24 Bhindranwale operated 'from inside a whale,'25 seemingly without concern for other points of view. 'In this independence lay much of Bhindranwale's appeal.'26 Yet, the same aloofness also represented his most significant weakness: a failure to participate in the democratic process. 'Villagers came to him with their problems, Bhindranwale pronounced judgments and called frightened policemen on the telephone to instruct them on how a matter was to be settled.'27 Subhash Kirpekar was 'perhaps the last journalist to meet the lion in his den.' During the interview Bhindranwale responded thus to a question on succession planning, 'It is not an elective post. I think whosoever attains the status of God will come up as my successor.'28 Myth #3: Bhindranwale Did Not Demand Khalistan In the absence of a universally accepted definition of the term 'Khalistan,' the usage here is consistent with its origin wherein Dr. Vir Singh Bhatti envisioned it in 1940 as a 'theocratic' monarchy, which would by definition be inconsistent with the Indian Constitution.29 Bhindranwale's standard response to the question of Khalistan, an independent Sikh state, was noncommittal: 'we are not in favor of Khalistan nor are we against it.'30 He often also clarified that if Khalistan came about, 'We won't reject it. We shall not repeat the mistake of 1947.'31 To that he added, 'if the Indian Government invaded the Darbar Sahib complex, the foundation for an independent Sikh state will have been laid.'32 The book Fighting for Faith and Nation: Dialogues with Sikh Militants by Cynthia Keppley Mahmood has received wide acceptance among radical Sikhs. In the book, Harpal Singh recalls a meeting with Bhindranwale during which the preacher remarked, 'staying in India would mean the genocide of the Sikhs.'33 The implication that anything short of a separate state would spell eventual disaster for the Sikhs amounted to an implicit vote for Khalistan. On other occasions Bhindranwale was more explicit, 'Frankly, I don't think the Sikhs can live with or within India.'34 The Dal Khalsa, responsible for hoisting a Khalistan flag at a Sikh convention on March 20, 1982 at Anandpur Sahib, were seen forming a protective ring around Bhindranwale when, in 1981, he was holding the police at bay at Chowk Mehta in an attempt to avoid arrest.35 Although 'Bhindranwale was never openly associated with the Dal Khalsa,' most observers regarded it as 'Bhindranwale's party.'36 In early 1983, India's intelligence is said to have obtained a copy of a letter from Bhindranwale to Jagjit Singh Chauhan in which he promised full support for Khalistan.37 Finally, while we're on the subject, we might as well also cover one other related myth, i.e. that Khalistan has never had any substantial support amongst Sikhs in India. In an interview with B.B.C. correspondent Mark Tully just days before his death, S.G.P.C. President Gurcharan Singh Tohra answered a question about his personal views on Khalistan by admitting that 'some personal desires are better kept hidden.'38 According to Ved Marwah, a former senior police officer on Indira Gandhi's 'select committee for monitoring Punjab affairs,' a majority of the Sikhs supported separatism in the wake of Operation Bluestar.39 In a recent interview,40 Lt. Gen. Kuldip Singh Brar estimated that if Khalistan had been declared prior to Operation Bluestar, 'a large section of the Punjab police might have crossed over to support Bhindranwale.' Overly optimistic claims by pro-India commentators that the Sikhs have 'moved on' are consistently belied by informed parties who note, '[Operation Bluestar] has not been forgotten, and you [the visitor] will find many people in Amritsar keen to explain the Sikh side of the story.'41 Myth #2: Only a Tiny Minority of Sikhs Revere Bhindranwale as a Martyr In Khushwant Singh's words, '[Operation Bluestar] gave the movement for Khalistan its first martyr in Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale.'42 In 1985, Harkishan Singh Surjeet had optimistically announced that Bhindranwale's martyr status would only be 'temporary.'43 However, on this day last year, Joginder Singh Vedanti, the jathedar of the Akal Takht, an approximate Sikh counterpart to the Vatican, formally declared Bhindranwale a 'martyr' and awarded his son, Ishar Singh, a siropa (robe of honor).44 The function was organized by the S.G.P.C., 'a sort of parliament of the Sikhs.'45 The Encyclopedia of Sikhism, edited by Harbans Singh, a widely respected scholar of Sikh studies, describes Bhindranwale as 'a phenomenal figure of modern Sikhism.'46 Bhindranwale's posters and speeches are among the 'most popular' items at Punjab's rural fairs, held on occasions such as the Hola Mohalla festival.47 Gurtej Singh Brar, a former I.A.S. officer and S.G.P.C. National Professor of Sikhism, was suspended from the I.A.S. for making the following statement: 'The Sikh nation theory has been current among the Sikhs since the time of Guru Nanak. There should be others like Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale to lead the Sikhs and take up their cause of righteousness and truth.'48 Several North American gurdwaras prominently display Bhindranwale's pictures at entrances and in langar (community kitchen) halls. This writer has personally witnessed the phenomenon at gurdwaras in Detroit, Michigan and Toronto, Ontario (see picture). In the words of Vir Sanghvi, one of India's leading political commentators, '[bhindranwale] remains a martyr in the eyes of many Sikhs. Even today, rare is the Sikh politician who will dare to call him what he was: a fanatic and a murderer.'49 Myth #1: Bhindranwale Was Not a Terrorist In 1985, Citizens for Democracy (C.F.D.), founded by Jayaprakash Narayan and chaired by the noted civil libertarian Justice V.M. Tarkunde, produced a report on the Punjab crisis. The report, banned in India because of its strong indictment of the state, has received wide acceptance within the diaspora Sikh community despite its acknowledgement of 'Bhindranwale's role in inciting violence.'50 Violent thoughts seemed second nature to Bhindranwale. He often made extremely cruel remarks with utmost sincerity, 'If a true Sikh drinks, he should be burnt alive.'51 Tavleen Singh discovered that in Bhindranwale's darbar (court), 'concepts like non-violence were mocked and sneering remarks made about Gandhi.'52 Perhaps Khushwant Singh said it best, 'He well understood that hate was a stronger passion than love.'53 Although the 'mad monk'54 was politically astute enough to recant vicious statements made in the heat of the moment, it is instructive to note just how bellicose he was when aroused. Harmit Singh Batra was in the Darbar Sahib complex on April 13, 1978 and quotes Bhindranwale, 'We will not allow this Nirankari convention to take place. We are going to march there and cut them to pieces!'55 Following the clash with the Nirankaris on April 13, 1978, the 'Sant' and his cohorts were always armed. Bhindranwale often publicly recited his mantra, 'being armed, there is no sin greater than not seeking justice.'56 And they perceived plenty of injustice all around, which they rectified with the use of illegal force. After the assassination of the Nirankari leader Gurbachan Singh on April 24, 1980, Bhindranwale is universally acknowledged to have remarked that if he ever met Ranjit Singh, the suspected killer, he would weigh him in gold (i.e. reward him with his weight in gold).57 On October 22, 1982, Bhindranwale made a public statement threatening the 'political and physical end' of anyone who didn't press for the full implementation of the Anandpur Sahib Resolution.58 On August 17, 1983, Bhindranwale asked Sikh youth to buy a motorcycle and a revolver and threatened to kill 5,000 Hindus in an hour if the police delayed the minibus he had sent to fetch Amrik Singh who had just been released from police custody.59 During a speech on September 20, 1983, Bhindranwale stated clearly that he would 'embrace' Sikhs who exacted revenge upon those who were guilty of torturing, killing, or humiliating Sikhs. He said, 'Getting away from there is your job, protecting you here [in the Darbar Sahib complex] is mine.'60 On November 17, 1983, Bhindranwale bluntly demanded 'that all Hindus should leave Punjab.'61 During a public speech delivered on May 24, 1984 at the Darbar Sahib complex, Bhindranwale openly admitted his complicity in the gruesome beheading of Surinder Singh Chinda for his role in the elimination of Bhindranwale's leading hit man, Surinder Singh Sodhi.62 Even Bhindranwale's staunchest supporters only go as far as stating, 'Bhindranwale consistently opposed violence against any innocent person.'63 The autocratic Bhindranwale had assumed singular jurisdiction over the guilt and innocence of a good portion of India's citizens. And to him lethal violence was a justified means of punishment for those whom he considered culpable. He was the legislature, executive and judiciary all rolled into one with complete disregard for the democratic concept of the separation of powers. The result was nothing short of 'ethnic cleansing.'64 Dilbir Singh (see above) related the following account of how masterfully Bhindranwale ordered the killing of Lala Jagat Narain, proprietor-editor of the Hind Samachar group of newspapers: And in one edition Lala had written in an editorial comment that Taura [Tohra, then president of the S.G.P.C.] and Ajnoha [then jathedar of the Akal Takht] are traitors. On that day in a great fury he [bhindranwale] called upon someone to read aloud what Lala had said. There was quiet. 'Our turban has been torn from our heads,' he proclaimed. Then one of his followers asked, 'What are your orders?' Again in anger, he said 'Orders, you need orders! What orders? Are you blind?' Now you see he did not say anything. And they said it. 'O.K.' meaning thereby, we'll finish this man. So, then, 3-4 days later, Lala was coming from Ludhiana and they fired upon him.65 According to Chand Joshi, a veteran correspondent for The Hindustan Times, 'In the Nirankari Baba murder case, for instance, the C.B.I. claimed to have pin-pointed four suspects including Jarnail Singh Brar alias Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale. The arrest warrants had been given to the Punjab police but were not served because of 'orders from the highest quarters.' '66 It is worth noting, 'The decision to release Bhindranwale was taken by the [indira Gandhi and Zail Singh] government. It was not the verdict of a court.'67 Finally, it is impossible to accept that the people closest to Bhindranwale could consistently perpetrate monstrous violence without his endorsement. Nachhatar Singh, arrested by the police for the murder of Lala Jagat Narain, is said to have fingered Bhindranwale for ordering the killing.68 The hijackers of an Indian Airlines plane on September 20, 1981 claimed to be members of the Dal Khalsa and demanded the release of Bhindranwale, who had been arrested in connection with the murder of Lala Jagat Narain.69 In a speech, Bhindranwale 'praised his young lieutenants' for the hijacking.70 On July 18, 1982, a police party from the Beas Thana in Amritsar district stopped a jeep. Most of the occupants were residents of Bhindranwale's gurdwara Gurdarshan Parkash at Chowk Mehta. They attacked the police and were arrested. No case was initiated.71 The next day, Amrik Singh, Bhindranwale's most trusted lieutenant, and six close associates of Bhindranwale, including Bhindranwale's personal driver Kulwant Singh, were arrested for an attempt on the life of Joginder Singh Sandhu, the Nirankari Mandal's propaganda secretary.72 Concluding Remarks In closing, here is a sampling of additional points to ponder: Whereas 'nobody was ever refused an interview,'73 he refused to surrender to anyone but sufficiently orthodox Sikh policemen.74 While he professed the highest standards of Sikhism, he practiced gender discrimination.75 Although he viewed modernity as evil, he had no compunctions about using modern firearms. Whereas many Sikhs regard him as a 'messiah,'76 his 1984 prophecy failed to materialize: 'In the next ten years Sikhs will get their liberation. This will definitely happen.'77
  12. "Last night, I went to a showing of Punjab 1984. Writing when you’re emotional has its place, but I chose to step away from my immediate feelings after walking out of the theatre last night and reflect on how I actually felt after I was able to separate myself from that experience somewhat. I stepped into that theatre not entirely knowing what to expect, but not expecting something like Sadda Haq (which I thought was really well done). And then the movie started and I was taken aback by the realness of the images before me, by the humanness of the families being portrayed and by the storyline that was developing. It drew feeling out of you. Just to get you up to speed, Shivjit Singh (Diljit) is a kharku singh who is moved to join the Khalistan freedom movement after his father is killed in the 1984 attack on Darbar Sahib—his death justified by Punjab police with a baseless allegation that he was a terrorist—and he himself is tortured in police interrogation. Experiencing firsthand the brutality of the Punjab Police and injustice within India’s judicial system, he takes up armed resistance against the state. Were I to have walked out of the theatre before the end of the first half, I would have had trouble writing a coherent review encouraging you to watch it because I was truly moved by the humanness of the story that was being depicted. But then comes the second half. For those who have seen it already and those who are going to see it, you may have different reactions to this portion. The second half of the film is largely dedicated to portraying the film’s perception of the actions of Sikh Freedom Fighters. Emphasis on the word ‘perception’. The first major depiction is of Shivjit Singh placing explosives on a bus full of innocent people, which his “higher-ups” demanded of him. The next was imagery of kharkus (freedom fighters) lining up innocent Hindus, even those who were Khalistani sympathizers, and shooting them with as much discrimination as the Punjab police. After that came the killing of a rehatvaan (spiritually disciplined) kharku singh by corrupted “kharku singhs”. Suddenly I was no longer teary-eyed and emotional over the film, but aware that I needed to analyze the content with a sobered sense of detachment. You can question what the purpose in these portrayals was. Perhaps, in the filmmaker’s eyes, it was to reflect the human reality of those placed on all spectrums of the Punjab struggle. Perhaps it was to appease those in Punjab who have an interest in preventing outright sympathy with the Khalistan movement. Perhaps it was the film’s attempt to make everyone happy. The practical implication, however, was that most Khalistani freedom fighters are self-interested, manipulative and corrupted. The implication of this portrayal of the Khalistan movement was that if you are not the type of person to critically analyze the media that you are viewing, or do not have a solid base of knowledge on 1984 and the freedom movement to begin with, or were simply drawn into the emotional roller coaster that the film was attempting to take you on, you would leave with the perception that the struggle for Khalistan was obsolete because the only kharku who can remain true to his cause is a fictionalized, idealized character played by Diljit. The practical implication, however, was that most Khalistani freedom fighters are self-interested, manipulative and corrupted. This is where it should start concerning you that one of the main characters who you can sympathize with and believe in throughout is a famous, well-known celebrity. Celebrities are different than real people, right? Only someone so plainly exceptional could have come out of the movement so morally unscathed, right? Where Sadda Haq acted as a well-written argument for the relevance of the Punjab freedom movement, Punjab 1984 was an emotional trip that attempted to humanize a political struggle while forgetting (perhaps conveniently) to build a factual base for the emotional content that was being showered upon the audience. For someone walking into that theatre with limited background knowledge to see the main portrayal of a freedom fighting group as being succumbed to corruption and openly opposing Sikh values, a judgment is going to be made about the overall sincerity of the Khalistan movement. If this film was packaged as a reflection of the Khalistan movement, the producers should have spoken to actual freedom fighters and those central to the Khalistan movement before attempting to create a script. Creating judgments from the sidelines about a movement with deep complexities was plainly irresponsible on the production team’s part. By no means am I saying that every individual involved in the Khalistan movement was a reflection of Sikh values. That is the humanness of any freedom struggle. Humans don’t come pre-labelled as good or bad—it is a spectrum. But for this film to portray the steadfast and morally true kharkus as the rare minority was backwards and harmful. It is not a reflection of the ideological roots of the Khalistan movement and serves to undermine the validity of that struggle. The factual reality is that most of the moral issues and killings of innocents portrayed in the movie was done by the government and its undercover operatives—not freedom fighters. This film did little justice to the ideology of the Khalistan movement. No doubt, it left you feeling emotional and charged up, but I question whether the emotional build-up was actually a good thing. Without proper context established for 1984 and without proper explanation for the purpose of Khalistan—other than what you can infer through emotion—the audience is left with dangerous gaps. Yes, it’s important to feel and to experience through emotion, but hasn’t our community been doing that for long enough? What we are missing is dialogue and critical analysis. To charge up an audience and leave them ultimately feeling disillusioned to everyone in this film but an idealized celebrity figure is wrong in my opinion. I would not encourage someone with no background information about the Khalistan movement to watch this film and accept it as even a remotely accurate portrayal of Khalistani freedom fighters or the ideology of the Khalistan movement. I think the primary benefit in viewing this film, however, is for the purpose of analysis and critical discussion. If you watch the film, take out the time to really analyze the content that’s being presented to you. It’s easy to see through the lens of emotion and lose sight of the problematic content being represented, especially from a film that was widely advertised in Gurdwaras worldwide." http://www.sikh24.com/2014/06/exclusive-punjab-1984-movie-review/#.U7BYafldVps
  13. Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh 30 years ago, on 3rd June 1984, Indira Gandhi (a corrupt dictator of India who abused the rule of law) ordered the Indian army to conduct a Sikh Genocide and attack the most holiest Sikh Gurdwara (Sri Harmandir Sahib, Amritsar also known as the Golden Temple) and up to 40 other Sikh Gurdwara's across the Punjab. Thousands of Sikhs, including women and children were murdered. An Indian army of 100,000 mobilized and deployed throughout Punjab with automatic weapons, tanks, artillery, helicopters and armoured vehicles against civilian Sikhs who were mainly farmers. The media was banned. The pretext to the Sikh genocide was that the army were seeking to arrest one man... The Akal Takht, the symbolic seat of supreme Sikh temporal authority was reduced to rubble. Gurdwara Darbar Sahib was damaged with over 300 tank shells and bullets. The Sikh Reference Library with precious hand written manuscripts of the Gurus was looted and then burned to the ground. The Akal Takht treasury Toshakhana with priceless historical artefacts of Maharaja Ranjit Singh was also looted and burned. Can you imagine the Italian army destroying the Vatican? or the Saudi's ordering an attack on Mecca? Some governments, including the UK, betrayed the Sikhs and supported the Indians against the Sikhs. The world's press supported unsubstantiated, false claims by Indian propaganda and dehumanized Sikh's (one of the eight stages of Genocide), calling them extremists/ militants. Are you taking part in one of the many organised marches across the world? If so, where? (New York, London, ?) Why did the world, including the UN, turn a blind eye? Do you think justice will ever be done? To commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Sikh Genocide we have released a collection of 71 speeches by Baba Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale and a set of speeches by Bhai Jaswant Singh Khalra (who uncovered Sikh genocide with Indian Police involvement during the 1984-94 period). Both paid for their service to Sikhi by being murdered at the hands of the Indian state. http://www.discoversikhism.com/sikh_media/speeches_of_baba_jarnail_singh_bhindranwale.html http://www.discoversikhism.com/sikh_media/speeches_of_bhai_jaswant_singh_khalra.html If you have any more speeches of Baba Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, Bhai Jaswant Singh Khalra or anyone else, please let us know. 15. Security agencies fear revival of military action in Punjab as 30th anniversary of Operation Bluestar approaches Militancy came to an end three decades ago in Punjab. But Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI)-backed Sikh militant groups are attempting to revive terror and bloodshed in the state, sources in the Punjab Police said. The Pakistani spy agency can use the ultras of four Khalistan terrorist groups - Ranjit Singh Meeta - headed Khalistan Zindabad Force (KZF), Jagtar Singh Tara-headed Khalistan Tiger Force (KTF), Wadhawa Singh-led Babbar Khalsa International (BKI) and Harminder Singh Minto-led Khalistan Liberation Force (KLF) - to revive militancy and launch terror strikes in Punjab, the sources said. The ISI and the radical Sikh groups are trying to lure unemployed youths to join terror groups, they added. +3 "The Sikh militant groups, particularly those operating from Pakistan, may launch nationwide terror strikes as the ISI wants these inactive outfits to prove their worth," a top source said. More...Talking tough on Day One: PM Modi tells Pakistan's PM to bust anti-India terror net in their first formal meeting 'LeT had a hand in Herat attack': Karzai insists consulate strike was 'in Pakistan's interests' The hand of peace: India's new PM Modi in historic handshake with his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif Intelligence inputs, the sources said, were received that reportedly show that the ISI had held two important meetings with the Sikh terrorist groups recently. +3 Wadhawa Singh, Harminder Singh Minto, Gajinder Singh (Dal Khalsa), Ranjeet Singh Meeta, Jagtar Singh Tara, Lakhweer Singh Rode (International Sikh Youth Federation) and Paramjit Singh Panjwar (Khalistan Commando Force) were among the top ultras who attended the meetings. Although no link between the Indian Mujahideen (IM) and Khalistan outfits has been found so far, security agencies fear the ISI can bring them together the IM's strength and ability to carry out blasts coupled with the knowledge of Khalistan terrorists about the demography, local language and culture. In last three years, 20 Sikh militants were arrested from many parts of the country. Most of these arrests were made in Punjab. On April 29, the Punjab Police had recovered 10 rocket launchers, one country-made bomb, one IED, one AK 47 rifle, six magazines, two sten guns, two empty magazines and one shotgun from a canal near Kaind Canal Bridge in Ludhiana. Earlier, the revelation about the British government's role in Operation Blue Star had renewed the controversy surrounding the 30- year-old episode. The turbulent militancy days may be over, but the Operation Blue Star remains a highly emotive issue in Punjab. The Sikh radical groups do not let the memories of in Operation Blue Star fade away. The anniversary of Operation Blue Star is observed every year and relatives of Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale and others are honoured by these groups. The ShiromaniI Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee has even constructed a memorial in the memory of those killed in Operation Blue Star. Moreover, the 1984 anti-Sikh riots and the pathetic attitude of subsequent governments, especially those of the Congress, have only hurt the feelings of the Sikh community. The demand for a separate Khalistan may have become faint over the last three decades in Punjab, but the Khalistan terrorist groups continue to incite gullible unemployed Punjab youths by citing the 1984 anti-Sikh riots and Operation Blue Star. Ratandeep is new face of militancy Ratandeep Singh is one of the most dreaded and well-trained active Sikh militants currently residing in Pakistan. He has been extensively trained by Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) in weapons and explosives. He has been trained in assembly of IEDs. Jagmohan Singh, who had assassinated religious ideologue Rulda Singh, had been personally trained by Ratandeep Singh in 2009. Ratandeep is likely to take over the Babbar Khalsa International (BKI). He consults BKI chief Wadhawa Singh on major decisions and has established operational bases in countries such as Thailand and Cambodia. In October 2011, Ratandeep had organised a transfer of a large consignment of arms and FICN across the Indo- Pak border for an operation focused on targeting a Shiv Sena leader in Punjab. Meeting: Sources say Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) chief Avtar Singh Makkar was present at the reported meeting between military groups Cracks among terror groups By Manjeet Sehgal Cracks have appeared among the Khalistan terrorist groups as they are under immense pressure from the ISI and their funding sources. Sources privy to the information told Mail Today that Khalistan Commando Force chief Paramjit Singh Panjwad had an altercation with another top Khalistan ultra Ranjit Singh Meeta at a meeting on May 21 at Hasan Abdal in Pakistan. Kuldip Singh alias Jujhar Singh Amrali, a Babbar Khalsa terrorist, was also present when the altercation took place. Sources said other parties had to intervene to stop the two ultras from quarrelling. Radical Sikh group Dal Khalsa's UK chief Manmohan Singh was also present at the Gurudwara Panja Sahib, the sources said. There were also reports that Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) chief Avtar Singh Makkar was present at the meeting. When contacted, the SGPC chief denied the altercation took place in his presence and clarified that he only met Sikh pilgrims. "Yes I had gone to Panja Sahib (Hasan Abdal). Patha (recitation) was going on when I reached there. I neither met anybody nor did I spoke to anyone. I was informed by the DGP that there is danger to my life in Pakistan, but nothing of that sort happened," Makkar told Mail Today. +3 New routes: The railway route connecting Jammu-Kashmir and Bihar is now being used to smuggle arms into the troubled Kashmir Valley, after security was tightened Hizbul using Punjab to smuggle weapons By Manjeet Sehgal After the security was tightened on the Indo-Pakistan border, the Kashmiri militants found a new route to smuggle "cheap" arms from Bihar's illegal gun factories. The railway route connecting Jammu-Kashmir and Bihar is now being used to smuggle arms into the troubled Kashmir Valley. Punjab is being used as a transit point to smuggle weapons by the terrorist outfits, source said. The disclosure was made by a Hizbul Mujahideen arms courier who was caught with weapons in Pathankot on May 9. Ravesh Ul-Islam, the alleged Hizbul arms courier, told his interrogators that the Kashmiri militants are now getting their arms supplies from Bihar via Punjab route. According to the Punjab police, Kashmiri militants share good relations with criminals running illegal arms factories in Bihar. Besides weapons, the Hizbul arms courier was found in possession of two mobile phones. One of the SIMs came from Pakistan. Deputy Superintendent of Police of Government Railway Police (GRP), Hardeep Singh said a Punjab police team has left for Bihar to establish Hizbul's links with the illegal arms manufacturers in the eastern state. Sources said Ravesh Ul-Islam had first visited Bartha in Bihar's Munger district on November 13 last year. He was asked by a Hizbul Mujahideen commander to buy a pistol and was also given Rs 45,000. He had visited the same village on March 3 this year and had bought a pistol and ammunition worth Rs 35,000. The Hizbul arms courier was caught when he was attempting to smuggle weapons for the third time. "This was his third trip to Munger district. During his two earlier trips, Ravesh Ul-Islam had smuggled three pistols. The investigation is on," the DSP said. Mark Tully is of anglo indian background.During his reporting he presents a very selective bias version of the events during the 1980s. Chosees to call Bhindrawale a khalistani, when all evidence show bhindrawale fought for the Anandpur Sahib resloution. Calls the killing of 10000 sikhs in india as a riot. Oxford dictionary definition of a riot as disturbance of the peace, Slaughter of 10000 people is more than an unpeaceful disturbance As a hindi speaker never mentions Amitabh bachans speech blood for blood.Which was aired on state india tv .Any good reporter would have watching all reports of events during the killing of indira gandhi for his homework. Why has bbc never mentioned this speech
  18. SGPC involved in attack on Sri Harmander Sahib in 1984 Amritsar, Punjab: Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandak Committee (SGPC) is the caretaker of all historical Sikh Gurudwaras in India except Delhi. Delhi Gurudwaras are being managed by Delhi Gurdwara Management Committee (DGMC). Both property management entities are being 100% funded by donations from the Sikh Community. Millions of dollars are being pumped into these organizations everyday and at the end of the day they are directly controlled by political parties of India. Majority of the time DGMC is in favor of Congress Party and SGPC is always in favor of Shiromani Akali Dal. Attack on Sri Harmander Sahib by Indira Gandhi led government was carried out 30 years ago. It is now revealed that Akali Dal and SGPC were kept in confidence and were 100% involved in meetings with Indira Gandhi’s office a few weeks before the attack on Sri Harimander Sahib. Akali Dal under Longowal, Badal and SGPC under Tohra chief never liked the idea of the popularity of Saint and Soldier Sant Jarnail Singh Bhinderanwale in the hearts of Sikh community. People started listening to Sant Jarnail Singh ji because of his effective and religious leadership. Sant Jarnail Singh ji’s presence at Sri Harmander Sahib was an eyesore for SGPC. They were under the pressure from Government agencies to take action against activists of Bhinderanwale. After murder of Bhai Sodhi, Sant Jarnail Singh ji Bhinderanwale came to know had enough of the true face and goals of SGPC. Seeing that, SGPC and Alkali Dal quickly gave permission and helped Indira Gandhi to attack Sri Harmander Sahib. In Onkar Singh Goraya book, Operation Bluestar and After – An eyewitness account, Brig (retd) Goraya, then a colonel with the 15 Infantry Division based in Amritsar that was involved in Operation Blue Star, telling insights into the meek conduct of Akali leaders trapped inside as he was put directly in-charge of pulling them safely out of the temple complex. He was given the room number from central govt where SGPC and Akali leaders were hiding. On the morning of June 6, 1984 Col Goraya was tasked to bring out the top Akali leaders trapped inside the complex and whose lives were in danger from the activists. When he reached the Guru Ram Das Sarai, inside the complex he found the dead and dying in different rooms. Some injured pilgrims begging for water and army men oblivious to the cries, as they concentrated on clearing the rooms of activists. Col Goraya found them in room no 8 and when he told Sant Harcharan Singh Longowal, Gurcharan Singh Tohra, Balwant Singh Ramoowalia and others that he had come to escort them to safety, “I heard a collective sigh of relief. They all got up instantly to follow me and there was no denial or hesitation.” Very different from an ‘eyewitness’ account given out by the Shiromani gurudwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) later on, according to which the leaders Sant Longowal apparently asked an army major to shoot them, saying that they had no wish to live when the ‘the army’ had killed so many pilgrims, staff and volunteers. For the first time in 400 years the recital of gurbani was about to stop in the Golden Temple. As dusk fell on June 5, commandos dressed in jet-black dungarees slipped into the temple complex through the road between the serias and the Guru Ramdass langar building. They were able to bring back safely Akali Dal leaders like Harchand Singh Longowal and Gurcharan Singh Tohra along with their key aides living in the Teja Singh Samundari Hall, Guru Ramdass Serai and Guru Nanak Niwas. As men of the 10 Guards under Lt-Colonel Mohammed Israr, regarded as some of the finest troops in the world and trained specifically for the assault role, prepared for the H-hour, hasty consultations got underway in the serais where moderate Akali leaders like Longowal, Tohra and the Dal’s official spokesman Balwant Singh Ramoowalia were hiding. Read more at: http://indiatoday.intoday.in/story/punjab-terrorism-operation-bluestar-army-operation-at-golden-temple/1/360785.html Read more at: http://indiatoday.intoday.in/story/punjab-terrorism-operation-bluestar-army-operation-at-golden-temple/1/360785.html After 1984 attack, SGPC took over Harmander Sahib complex and started re-building Sri Akal Takht Sahib with the financial help provided by Indira Gandhi via Nihang Santa Singh. Seeing this, Taksali Singhs and other jathabandis took over Sri Akal Takht Sahib without any fight in 1986. SGPC workers and officers simply left their desks and offices during the Sarbat Khalsa gathering of 1986. Under false leadership of various jathabandis, sikh youth started getting eliminated by fake encounters and general public trust on jathabandis drastically fell in the negative levels. Only less than a dozen out of 170 SGPC members passed 10th grade. Majority of the SGPC members are involved in drinking and consuming narcotic products. Immediate family members of elected SGPC members are patits (shorn hair). Few of the SGPC members are even involved in drug trafficking and work directly with Punjab political party “Akali Dal (Badal)”. Annual budget of close to 1000 crores is usually passed behind the closed doors and that only take few hours. There is no outside audit financial accounting firm nor any ethics department to make sure everything is going according to law and Sikh code of conduct. 19. WJKK WJKF As we have seen lately all around the world in major cities there have been peaceful protests in remembrance of shaheeds of 1984 and to get recognized justice for the attacks. Majority of these events have been attended by thousands of Sikhs and often take up many blocks in the downtown core of major cities... NYC, London, Vancouver, etc... Just want to hear Sangats opinion... How much affect do these demonstrations that happened, and have been happening for many years have on the Indian Government? Is the Indian Government realizing the mass events that are happening, are they realizing that justice is still needed to be granted? Are these demonstrations doing anything for the Khalistan movement? Bhul Chuk Maaf. WJKK WJKF

At least two people were wounded in the violence, according to an AFP photographer at the temple in the city of Amritsar, which is the holiest shrine in the Sikh religion. Hundreds of Sikhs had gathered at the shrine to pay their respects to those killed in the June 6 1984 raid of the temple by Indian troops aimed at flushing out armed separatists demanding an independent Sikh homeland. “Today we were supposed to have a solemn remembrance for the martyrs of 1984 so what has happened is very sad,” said a spokesman for a radical Sikh outfit called the Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) whose supporters were involved in the clashes. “The Temple has once again been dishonoured today,” the spokesman Prem Singh Chandumajra told reporters. 21. Amritsar: Over 12 people were injured when two groups clashed inside the premises of the Golden Temple in Amritsar this morning. The clashes followed an altercation that reportedly happened between the two groups during a ceremony organised to mark the anniversary of Operation Bluestar. Sources say Simranjit Singh Mann of the Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) reportedly wanted to address the gathering but his demand was turned down by the Akal Takth Jathedar. This reportedly left his supporters angry who then clashed with the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee or SGPC task force members. Members of the two groups, seen brandishing swords and lathis, clashed for close to half an hour. The situation is calm now. Heavy security deployment is in place. Terming the clashes "unfortunate," SAD spokesperson Prem Singh Chandu Majra said the SGPC will take action against the culprits. http://www.ndtv.com/article/cities/over-12-injured-as-two-groups-clash-inside-golden-temple-premises-536943?curl=1402036516 This is very sad to see to happen in near Harmandir Sahib. 25. Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh. Article from http://asrandhawa.wordpress.com/ (May 2, 2014) Australia made history when it welcomed a mass murderer from India Amitabh is an alleged mass murderer, a perpetrator of 1984 Sikh genocide. Today Australia has announced scholarship on his name, the day is not far when Australia may declare another scholarship to honor Adolf Hitler, Mussolini, Stalin and Goebals. If a mass murderer of India can be honored, why not Nazis? Amitabh the alleged mass murder couldn’t dare to enter in Princess theater but chose back door, made mockery of agitators on stage inside, protesting against him outside in the venue. Kaur, who lost members of her family for no fault of theirs, recollects the incident, “I watched the live relay on Doordarshan and saw Amitabh Bachchan shouting the slogan – ‘Khoon ka badla khoon se lenge!‘. And everyone who saw the live telecast would know how Amitabh Bachchan provoked the riots.” The violence led to huge personal loss for Kaur – her husband and son were murdered as she watched, killed by a frenzied mob inside her house in West Delhi on November 1, 1984. Sadly, she also lost her three brothers, who were burnt to death. Racial vilification is the term in the legislation of Australia that refers to a public act that encourages or incites others to hate people because of their race, nationality, country of origin, colour or ethnic origin. Public acts of this type are illegal according to e.g., the Racial Vilification Act 1996 of South Australia. So, why has Australia chosen to ignore its principles and embrace a man accused of instigating Sikh genocide?
