  1. Guru Sahib says to us Gaveoh, Sunu, Paroh nit bani. Therefore they place singing first, followed by listening followed by reading. Therefore it is not a bad deed to listen to the bani but it would be very hard to stop the mind from wandering which is perhaps why you are doing other things whilst listening to the paath, which may be the cause of your current feelings; since you are not really listening to all of the paath. It is like watching TV whilst on the laptop, you do not focus entirely on whats on the TV it is background noise. What I would suggest is the following: Many people in your position listen to bani but follow the recording using a romanised Gutka. This way they are able to concentrate and can also move from romanised to gurmukhi. Many will disagree with me on this point but the 'paraas kala' of simran is very great and it needs to be balanced with other paath and seva. Therefore at this stage I would suggest you do Mool Mantar. Ideally obtain a mala which has 108 beads and do 6 mala a day - 648 mool mantar For amrit vela use your ego to wake you up. If you go to bed for at least 10.30pm your routine could then be: 3.30 am wake up - isnaan etc 4.15 am Mool Mantar 5.30 am aim to go to a local gurdwara With going to the gurdwara each morning you will begin to see some regular faces who will also notice you. Your ego will not want to be late since it wants to look good in front of these people. This has worked for numerous people. Finally do as much seva as you can in particular joria di seva (cleaning shoes) as you leave the gurdwara. Hopefully a combination of all of the above will help you on your path.
  2. I may be mistaken but it not Maharaja Bhupinder Singh who purchased the property for San Teja Singh to establish Shepherds Bush Gurdwara?
  3. Fateh Jee You need to have 2 times the amount of water and you don't start to heat the floor and butter together until the water has started to boil. Otherwise you are right there should be equal quantities of floor butter and sugar
  4. Some Singh's have encountered problems with their kirpan on Eurostar. The safest route is by car via the Euro-tunnel. Most of the Singh's who went to the smagam went by coach or car. The drive from Calais is about 3hrs so it is not too bad. I have done this journey numerous times and there has never been an issue.
  5. I am looking for an 11+ tutor for my twins to help with grammar school entry in Birmingham. Would welcome recommendations for tutors used by the sangat on this forum. Thanks
  6. Sorry to say this but as a standard letter this is awfully written. The grammar and syntax is poor and if you look at the following paragraph basic information is missing along with an inappropriate ending: Who were these assurances given by, to whom and when? The announcement does not create a major doubt about the assurance; it implies that the assurances were false to prevent a strong humanitarian voice. On numerous occasions over the last 4 years I have e-mailed the Sikh Federation to state they need to get more professional, get a diverse pool of individuals to support them and be more transparent with their activity. Instead I continually get a closed door. I would not class myself as one of them, but there are numerous highly educated, politically astute individuals out there, who want to be engaged but feel disfranchised. The other thread on placards for the rally demonstrate how poor we are in sending a strong signal. I am also disappointed that, despite raising it with numerous individuals, there will not be a separate rally for the Professor, or that the 5th June rally has not been changed to devote it's focus entirely to the case of the Professor. The people we will have before us on 5th June, leading the march and making the speeches have been there for the last 27 years, ask yourself what have the done or achieved over that time? Watching the Sikh Channels their only concern is to get as many youth at Hyde Park as possible to support their positions and boost their ego. You only need to ask where is the succession planning for Amrik Singh? There isn't one, since he is not prepared give up the limelight he has, despite the achievement record being very poor. Don't get me wrong I strongly believe that we must never forget 1984 and we need to ensure there is a strong voice. I would also not discourage anyone from showing their support on 5th June. BUT we need to start changing what we are doing in relation to 84 to give greater political and media interest; since we don't have it yet.
  7. I am amazed with some of the advice bring given on this thred re putting a kirpan in your dastar. I urge everyone not to a kirpan - no matter what the size - in your dastar. We are already having huge screening issues and in Italy there are numerous cases of dastars being removed. To date they have not found any item to support their searches. If even one Singh is found with a kirpan in their dastar it will be a disaster for the whole panth. As no food or drink whilst you are on the plane with your kirpan off, this is not a big deal and something my Singnia and I have been doing for the last 12 years with Guru Sahibs Kirpa. _Guest_ has described very well what you should do. Those who disagree with this advice, that is your prerogative; However those who are attempting to keep the bachan given to them by the Panj Pyare should have full barosi in Guru Sahib and not worry.
  8. When going to meet a Sant you should take fruit with you to give to them. There is a sakhi that when Sant Puran Singh came to the UK the only person to bring them fruit was Bhai Narung Singh and this was the reason they both became very close. The above is based on actual bachan from a Sant.
  9. At the end of the day we all spend money on cloths, which ultimately go out of fashion or just wear out and end up in the bin. If your old enough and you buy a car you loose plenty of money on it daily due to depreciation. So even if you donate £100 (less than the cost of your designer jeans) or £20 (what you pay monthly for your mobile phone bill) you will have supported in giving the Academy a new lease of life. Even if the Academy gets into problems again your initial donation will not have gone to waste since so many additional youngsters would have benefited over that time. Just as when their is a world crisis such as the floods in Pakistan you don't ask what the country is going to do to stop it happening again you donate money in the hope that they will develop the infrastructure, since the immediate need is to help those in need. The Academy is doing good work I sense they have become victims of the banking crisis like so many other businesses who have had terms of their loan changed. Since I am sure the bank is treating the Academy as a business. Therefore to get a loan of over £1m and to have kept abreast of repayments for so many years must justify that there is a business plan in place. Also lets not forget they paid £150k of the sum requested before coming to the wider sangant. The bottom line is that we are not giving our own money but the money Guru Sahib has given us, all we need to do is open our hearts a little bit. As so many have said to you if you have questions phone the Sevadaar or go and visit them rather than posting negativity on this forum. The rest of the sangant I would urge you that rather than going out for a Pizza give that £10 to the Academy or delay getting your new computer game and give the £30 to the Academy. Every little does truely help.
  10. It would be useful if as well as providing a formal statement that they provide their bank account details so that funds can be transferred electronically. All it requires is 150 people to donate £1,000 each. I am sure that there there are more than that number of graduate Gursikhs in the UK who can dip into their Daswand/savings. If there is a real need and it is verified by the Academy, i for one will pledge £1,000 and will transfer it as soon as I receive further information.

Sangrad Jan 14 Feb 13 March 14 April 14 May 15 June 15 July 16 Aug 17 Sep 17 Oct 17 Nov 16 Dec 16 I hope this thread does not start yet another mindless debate on the merits of the Nanakshai Calendar. The migration by the Akal Takhat back to Bikrami dates for the Gurpurb which are celebrated the most is an indication of the lack of credibility the calendar has. Also with virtually all Western Guru Ghar celebrating the start of the Christian New Year this evening further demonstrates that they themselves do not align themselves fully to the Nankshai Calendar. Since the New Year for Sikhs starts on 14th March each year, hence why the annual Calendar is launched in March each year by the Akal Takhat.
  13. I think the comment on the website re Christians definitely applies to us Sikhs. Therefore perhaps we need to look into our actions and compare those to the actions Guru Sahib required from us.
  14. As plenty of people say they can do what they like........which is true. However if they have given their head truly to Guru Sahib then for an Amritdhari Gursikh there is no such thing as a mehndi function, or maiyha or jago! An amritdhari should not be applying nehndi under any circumstance. However many will tell you it is fine, there are no problems with it............since we need to modenise Sikhi. HOWEVER we are not modernising Sikhi but diluting it. Just because your maan wants to do something you should not be justifying it under Sikhi..............just get on and do it but don't try to prove it is acceptable in Sikhi. As Guru Sahib says mehalaa 1 || First Mehla: sabhae ka(n)th mehaeleeaa sagaleeaa karehi seegaar || All are brides of the Husband Lord; all decorate themselves for Him. ganath ganaavan aaeeaa soohaa vaes vikaar || But when the time comes to settle their accounts, their red robes are corrupt. paakha(n)dd praem n paaeeai khottaa paaj khuaar ||1|| His Love is not obtained through hypocrisy. Her false coverings bring only ruin. ||1|| har jeeo eio pir raavai naar || In this way, the Dear Husband Lord ravishes and enjoys His bride. thudhh bhaavan sohaaganee apanee kirapaa laihi savaar ||1|| rehaao || The happy soul-bride is pleasing to You, Lord; by Your Grace, You adorn her. ||1||Pause|| gur sabadhee seegaareeaa than man pir kai paas || She is decorated with the Word of the Guru's Shabad; her mind and body belong to her Husband Lord. dhue kar jorr kharree thakai sach kehai aradhaas || With her palms pressed together, she stands, waiting on Him, and offers her True prayers to Him. laal rathee sach bhai vasee bhaae rathee ra(n)g raas ||2|| Dyed in the deep crimson of the Love of her Darling Lord, she dwells in the Fear of the True One. Imbued with His Love, she is dyed in the color of His Love. ||2|| pria kee chaeree kaa(n)dteeai laalee maanai naao || She is said to be the hand-maiden of her Beloved Lord; His sweetheart surrenders to His Name. saachee preeth n thuttee saachae mael milaao || True Love is never broken; she is united in Union with the True One. sabadh rathee man vaedhhiaa ho sadh balihaarai jaao ||3|| Attuned to the Word of the Shabad, her mind is pierced through. I am forever a sacrifice to Him. ||3|| saa dhhan ra(n)dd n baisee jae sathigur maahi samaae || That bride, who is absorbed into the True Guru, shall never become a widow. pir reesaaloo nouthano saacho marai n jaae || Her Husband Lord is Beautiful; His Body is forever fresh and new. The True One does not die, and shall not go. nith ravai sohaaganee saachee nadhar rajaae ||4|| He continually enjoys His happy soul-bride; He casts His Gracious Glance of Truth upon her, and she abides in His Will. ||4|| saach dhharree dhhan maaddeeai kaaparr praem seegaar || The bride braids her hair with Truth; her clothes are decorated with His Love. cha(n)dhan cheeth vasaaeiaa ma(n)dhar dhasavaa dhuaar || Like the essence of sandalwood, He permeates her consciousness, and the Temple of the Tenth Gate is opened. dheepak sabadh vigaasiaa raam naam our haar ||5|| The lamp of the Shabad is lit, and the Name of the Lord is her necklace. ||5|| naaree a(n)dhar sohanee masathak manee piaar || She is the most beautiful among women; upon her forehead she wears the Jewel of the Lord's Love. sobhaa surath suhaavanee saachai praem apaar || Her glory and her wisdom are magnificent; her love for the Infinite Lord is True. bin pir purakh n jaanee saachae gur kai haeth piaar ||6|| Other than her Beloved Lord, she knows no man. O Nanak, His Love is always with me. ||8||2||
  15. _:kaur:_ you raise a very valid point, however as is obvious from those who choose to dress as you described there is no shame that they are disrespecting our father Guru Gobind Singh. WHY.......because they are full of ego and think that they can and should modernise Sikhi. Also since they do what they do on public that they are not scared of anyone. HOWEVER..........as Guru Sahib says Jhasa Bijey Thesa Hi Kai. If they are in the wrong they will soon learn. I would rather not risk it and try to follow purtan asool that Guru Sahib have given us. As to those girls who wanna be modern and cool I am sure that they def do not have a paka Amrit Vela and thier nitnem in very minimal. If it wasn't why would they have no shame????? I look forward to the backlash which will be unleashed upon me.
