The aim is to present a unique, interactive and educational way of learning how to read and write the Punjabi language in class 1. Furthermore, the school's aim is to empower Sikh children with the knowledge of Sikh history in class 2 through a holistic and individualised approach. Our mission is to inspire a generation with the beautiful, blissful and blessed teachings of Dhan Sri Guru Granth Sahib Jee. To ensure that children born in the UK can understand, appreciate and relate to the importance Sikhi still holds today, the Sikh History class is taught in English. The teachers taking this class have previously been involved in organising Sikhi Camps run in Leicester over the last few years, some of whom are professional GCSE and A Level Teachers. The major task of all teachers is to enable students to achieve their full spiritual, social, emotional, physical and intellectual potential by developing in them relevant skills, competencies, attitudes, concepts and knowledge of Sikhi. Teachers alongside the students journey seek to develop self esteem and self-fulfilment within the framework of Sikh ideology. On Saturday 13th April 2013 The Sikh Community of Leicester (UK) would like to celebrate Vaisakhi by encouraging the sangat (congregation) to partake in the seva (selfless service) of the poor and homeless. “A poor person’s mouth is the treasure chest of God” and in the spirit of Vand Ke Shako (sharing) we would like to serve the community of Leicester. With increasing government cuts many individuals, families and children are suffering from harsh economic pressures. Leicester has 26,000 children living below the poverty line, according to national figures (BBC News). Furthermore, an increasing number of refugees and asylum seekers are facing extreme poverty. Accordingly, The Sikh Community of Leicester would like to support FareShare, British Red Cross and The Dawn Centre this Vaisakhi. These three local charities are carrying out vital work to help those suffering from poverty. On Saturday 13th April 2013 there will be a ‘Vaisakhi Food Drive’ marquee in the car park of Guru Tegh Bahadur Gurdwara, 106 East Park Road, Leicester, LE5 4QB between 9am-4pm so that people can drop off their non perishable food (“shelf-stable” items that do not spoil or decay therefore they are usually packaged or tinned) items and toiletry donations. Please note that donations must be vegetarian, egg free, alcohol free please. More donation details and contact information is attached on the poster and food drive donation list. If you're Gurdwara has a Punjabi School - get involved! The local Gurdwara we go to has about 100kids in the Punjabi School. With Guru Sahib's kirpa we've managed to get involved in the Punjabi School and made a few changes. Originally kids only came once a week to their lessons, this lesson was dependent on their ability so some were in the GCSE class, another in pre-GCSE and another in beginners etc. By getting involved, now the kids must come twice a week. All kids still come for their 1st class as normal...but the 2nd class is based on Gurmat and is taught by Amritdhari Gursikhs born in the UK alone. This class is very interacting with alot of visuals, audio, video's, presentations, activity....generally alot of creative learning. This class is based on age alone, so all the 5-6yrs in one class, 6-7yrs, 8yrs...14+ class. Now we're hoping that kids born in UK will be able to relate more to teachers born in the UK. As this has just started this year, who know what the future holds for this Punjabi School but one things seems clear, that both parents and kids are really enjoying the Punjabi School now and say they have learned alots, they actively do their homework and attendance is really good thus far. How to go about doing this in your School: Firstly you need a team on dedicated Gursikhs to be involved and become teachers, then you need the committee on side, and finally you need the Head Teacher onside. If you don't have all 3, then in our personal experience, you will come across alot of difficulties and find it hard to get involved in the Punjabi School. Now this Punjabi School doesn't 100% guarantee kids will become Amritdhari tomorrow but one thing is for certain, these kids will know their religion and at the end of 5yrs of learning they will know their faith and later on in their life they will be able to make an informed choice...the problem at the moment is Sikh kids don't know their religion so how will they ever be able to make an informed choice in the future...hopefully this School will change this? This all can only be done through the kirpa of Guru Sahib and Gursikhs working together and maintain pyaar at all times. Baki its in Guru Sahib hands what will come...all we can do is do ardass in his charan!

Bhenjee, your spot on as we too want kids to be able to do both and in the ideal situation we would have preferred to have the MMA class on another day. The problem we have is the limitation of space at the Oadby Gurdwara. Sunday is the best day as the Gurdwara is free after 2pm and the langar hall can be used for martial arts. There's been alot of interest from the Oadby Sangat that they want some form of Martial Arts for their kids, so taking into consideration the limitations we have and so as to ensure that kids can take lahaa of both (if they wish to) - we're running the MMA classes at 3 to 4.30pm giving people 0.5hr as Gatka classes start at 5pm. We currently have 3 students who are doing both Gatka & MMA on Sunday. 90% of the kids that attend the MMA class go to the Oadby Punjabi schoool and it was felt that it would be best to run the class over the weekend as the Punjabi classes run Monday to Friday and this way all Punjabi School kids can take lahaa of the MMA class. Also, with Saturday being a hugely busy day due to Weddings and Sukhmani Sahib Paath by ladies etc...Sunday was really the only day that the classes could run I hope that helps answers your question regarding the day & time of the class - Basically, it was the only day/time that suited the Gurdwara and the Trainers Vaheguroo
