My sister's sas went through a much worse time. It involved looking after her husband's elder brother s kids too. She wore her chura for just one day. If you don't choose the good ones through guidance from your parents or Guru or guide, then without any doubt you will have the dark powers working to bring you down. Ask Guru ji to protect you often and make sure you say your prayers and go to gurdwara often. Your dad does seem totally misguided right from the start.
