  1. Press Release and Sangat Update – Coventry, UK Sunday 22 July 2012 www.SatkaarCampaign.blogspot.com Ramgarhia Gurdwara Coventry agrees to stop meat and alcohol parties in Gurdwara community centre Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh! Further to our previous Sangat Update on 6 July 2012, we are pleased to inform the UK Sangat that with Guru Maharaaj’s kirpa the management committee of Ramgarhia Gurdwara Coventry have agreed to stop taking further bookings for meat and alcohol parties in the community centre which is owned by and is part of the complex of the Gurdwara. The decision was taken at a general body meeting of the Gurdwara on Sunday 15 July 2012. This followed a meeting that took place between representatives of the Ramgarhia Gurdwara committee and various Gurdwara Parbandaks from the midlands region onSaturday 14 July 2012. The representatives from Ramgarhia Gurdwara included the President Ajit Singh Jootla, General Secretary Swaran Singh Panesar and committee member Surinder Singh Jandu. The Ramgarhia Gurdwara Coventry committee representatives informed the Parbandaks that they had contemplated banning meat and alcohol parties for a considerable time but would now do so by way of submitting a motion at the general body meeting on 15 July 2012. The Gurdwara committee informed the Parbandaks that three more parties were scheduled to take place the last being on 18 August 2012 and that nofurther bookings with meat and alcohol would be taken after that date. It was confirmed that the Gurdwara sangat would be informed of this and that the community centre would in future be used as a multi-purpose centre including for Punjabi and Kirtan classes and that the possibility of using it for sport would also be looked into. The Ramgarhia Gurdwara Coventry committee representatives agreed for Satkaar Campaign Sevadaars to attend the Gurdwara at a future date and address the Gurdwara Sangat. We congratulate the Ramgarhia Gurdwara Coventry committee for the welcome step it has taken and are thankful to the midlands Parbandaks for their active involvement on finding a resolution in this matter. We are appreciative of the fact the Parbandaks arranged their meeting with the Ramgarhia committee at shortnotice upon our request. We look up to the Parbandaks and wish to continue working hand-in-hand with them to ensure that all UK Gurdwaras follow the 2006 Sandesh prohibiting meat and alcohol parties so that the authority of Akaal TakhatSahib is not undermined and maximum Satkaar for Sri Guru Granth Ji Maharaaj is maintained. Satkaar Campaign Sevadaars remained committed to raising awareness on this issue and will work together with all Parbandaks and Jathebandees to remove the cancer of party halls on Gurdwara premises from Gurdwara’s throughout the country. Finally, we would like to point out that we understand the three remaining parties at Ramgarhia Gurdwara Coventry community centre will permit meat and alcohol to be consumed. We invite the Gurdwara committee to liaise with the relevant families that have booked the parties to have them re-located to another venue not linked to the Gurdwara Sahib, so as to prevent the Beadbi that will otherwise occur. Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh!
  2. Urgent Sangat Update: Ramgarhia Gurdwara Coventry 6 July 2012 Waheguru Jee Ka Khalsa Waheguru Jee Kee Fateh Satkaar Campaign Sevadaars have been made aware of a possible protest this evening (Friday 6 July) outside the Ramgarhia Hall at Ramgarhia Gurdwara Coventry organised by the Sangat against a pre-booked party that we understand is taking place at the hall. Ramgarhia Gurdwara Coventry is one the remaining Gurdwaras which has a party hall permitting the consumption of meat and alcohol in contravention of the Akal Takhat Sandesh of 2006. Whilst we are pleased that the local Sangat is taking the initiative on this matter, we make a humble request to the organisers or attendees of any such protest to hold back from carrying it out at this stage. We are making this request as a meeting has been arranged between the Ramgharia Gurdwara Coventry committee and other Gurdwara prabhandaks from the wider West Midlands region on 14 July to discuss the matter of the Akal Takhat Sandesh of 2006 and Ramgarhia Gurdwara Coventry. The Gurdwara prabhandaks have requested no steps be taken prior to 14 July to allow the meeting to take place in an amicable manner. The outcome of the meeting will be communicated to the Sangat. The Gurdwara parbandaks have arranged the meeting with the committee of Ramgarhia Gurdwara Coventry at the request of Satkaar Campaign Sevadaars. We will provide the detailed background to the matter in an upcoming update. Waheguru Jee Ka Khalsa Waheguru Jee Kee Fateh
  3. Sangat Update and Press Release - 13 February 2012 Sri Akal Takhat Sahib issues further Aadesh regarding Gurdwara’s and party halls Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh! Satkaar Campaign Sevadaars are pleased to inform the UK Sikh Sangat that Sri Akal Takhat Sahib has issued a further Aadesh (edict) which re-confirms that no anti Gurmat activities such as parties with meat and alcohol are permitted on any Gurdwara owned or related property. Gurmukhi version of Aadesh: English translation of Aadesh: The Aadesh also confirms that all Gurdwara properties including educational, cultural or other places which have been built or run with the Sangat’s dasvand or donations made to the Gurdwara belong to the Gurdwara and cannot be sold or donated to another person or entity for anti Gurmat purposes. The Aadesh further states that the constitution, administration and management of Gurdwara Sahib’s is subject to and must accord with Panthic accepted Rehit Maryada. The Aadesh was issued to Satkaar Campaign Sevadaars and the Sikh Council UK by the Akal Takhat on 8 February 2012. Recognising the work of Satkaar Campaign Sevadaars and the Sikh Council UK, the Akal Takhat stated that it was pleased to note that Sikhs worldwide are seeking to promote the utmost respect for Sri Guru Granth Sahib Maharaaj and confirmed that maintaining reverence for Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji’s Saroops and preventing beadbi from taking place is the primary duty of every Sikh. The original version in Punjabi signed by Jathedar Singh Sahib Giani Gurbachan Singh and its English translation is attached with this update and can be found on the Satkaar Campaign blog at http://www.satkaarcampaign.blogspot.com. The Aadesh follows the unfortunate attempts by certain Gurdwara committees in the UK to justify the consumption of meat and alcohol in halls owned by those Gurdwaras by claiming the constitutions of those Gurdwaras permit such practices or by proposing to try to get around the issue by donating or selling at gross under-value those halls to third parties. Those Gurdwara committees believe that parties can continue to take place in their halls if they sell or donate them to some other organisation as they say the halls will have nothing further to do with the Gurdwara anymore as they will be owned by a separate organisation. Even though the misuse of the Gurdwara’s Golak funds for such anti Gurmat actions would appear to any common Sikh to be clearly wrong, sadly certain Gurdwara committees are contemplating selling their halls to non Sikh organisations for gross undervalue or even gifting them away for free. What this would mean is that the Sangat's money that has been donated to the Gurdwara will in effect be used to permanently subsidise meat and alcohol parties at the expense of the Sangat. Satkaar Campaign: Next Steps Satkaar Campaign Sevadaars will be forwarding a copy of the Aadesh to Gurdwara’s across the country. The Aadesh is a binding directive on Gurmat Maryada from the Akal Takhat and all offending Gurdwara management committees need to take immediate steps to comply with its terms and stop the gross sacrilege of parties with meat and alcohol on Gurdwara premises. Further steps also need to be taken as necessary to amend Gurdwara constitutions to remove all offending passages within such governance documents which must clearly stipulate that anti-Gurmat practices are prohibited in all properties belonging or related to the Gurdwara. To any Gurdwara committee that is proposing to sell or donate their hall or centre to some other entity to continue parties our message is clear: you cannot do this. We shall have no option but to report non compliance with this Aadesh by Gurdwara committees to the Akal Takhat for further action. We humbly request all Gurdwara’s, Gurdwara Councils, Jathebandees and other Sikh organizations to work together on a local and national level as necessary to implement this Aadesh and eradicate gross anti Gurmat practices from our Gurdwara’s. As the Akal Takhat itself stipulates in the Aadesh, maintaining Satkaar for Sri Guru Granth Sahib Maharaaj and preventing beadbi from taking place is the primary duty of every Sikh. We are wholeheartedly thankful and welcome the support and encouragement from Sevadaars of Sikh Council UK in the matter of the Aadesh from Sri Akal Takhat Sahib. As the leading umbrella Sikh organisation representing the UK Sikh Sangat nationally and internationally, the Satkaar Campaign looks up to the Sikh Council in this regard and we wish to continue working hand-in-hand with the SCUK to promote Satkaar for Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Maharaaj. What's been happening with the Satkaar Campaign in the past few months? A few months have passed since our last update but the Sangat can be rest assured that with its blessings, the Sevadaars have continued to work on raising awareness of Satkaar for Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. In the past few months two further Gurdwaras committees have stopped meat and alcohol being served on their Gurdwara premises. In these Gurdwaras, whilst the Satkaar Campaign Sevadaars were involved in liaising with and supporting the local Sangat, it was the local Sangat that took the lead and initiative to stop the abuse of Gurdwara property occurring. We are very pleased and encouraged that Sangat across the UK is now becoming aware of, and acting upon, their obligation to uphold Satkaar of Guru Sahib Ji's Saroops and Gurmat Maryada. Whilst we would like to disclose the location of these two Gurdwaras, local Sangat have requested us to refrain from doing so due to ongoing local sensitivities on this issue. Altogether, with Guru Sahib Ji's blessings and the continued support of the Sangat, to date, seven Gurdwara’s have stopped meat, alcohol, tobacco, dancing and parties at halls owned by or linked to such Gurdwara’s over the last 16 months following the inception of the Satkaar Campaign. Also, we understand that three Gurdwara’s that were planning to fund new party halls with Guru Sahib Ji's Golak have refrained from doing so. Satkaar Campaign Sevadaars will continue working positively with all Sikh communities to PEACEFULLY eradicate the consumption of meat and alcohol from the now few remaining Gurdwara premises throughout the country. Wider role for Satkaar Campaign? The Satkaar Campaign is a UK Sangat-led movement whose initial focus has been to raise awareness of the gross sacrilege that a small minority of Gurdwara committees in the UK are continuing to commit by permitting the consumption of meat and alcohol on Gurdwara owned or related premises. The Satkaar Campaign Sevadaars remain committed to continue raising awareness on this issue and our aim is to put a permanent end to such beadbi taking place in our Gurdwara’s in the UK. However, the Sangat may be aware that Sevadaars have repeatedly been requested and/or felt morally obliged to intervene in others matters besides party halls relating to Satkaar of Guru Granth Sahib Ji where the Sevadaars have been recently active. We will be providing further information on these matters and proposed new initiatives in the coming weeks. Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh!
  4. Press Release & Sangat Update Liverpool, 15th November 2011 Allegations of Beadbi at Liverpool Gurdwara Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh The Satkaar Campaign was recently made aware by local Sikhs of deeply disturbing allegations of Beadbi taking place at Liverpool Gurdwara. The Sevadaars sought to establish the facts of what was actually happening. After a number of conversations and a detailed email exchange with Mr HS Sohal from the Liverpool Gurdwara Committee, the Sevadaars were assured that no such Beadbi is taking place and the Committee considers that maintaining Satkaar for Guru Granth Sahib Ji Maharaaj is their primary obligation. We then requested several times the local Sikhs who were making the allegations to provide substantive evidence of the claims they had made. They failed to do this. We have now asked them that they now liaise with the Liverpool Gurdwara Committee in a sensible and civil manner to resolve any misunderstandings that may have arisen between them. As we are sure the Sangat will appreciate, the Satkaar Campaign does not wish to be drawn into any local "politics". Though we feel we have a moral obligation to investigate any serious allegations of Beadbi, and we will, with Guru Ji's and the Sangat's Blessings, pursue such cases where we are provided with substantive evidence, it appears disturbing that serious allegations of Beadbi are being raised for "point scoring". As we have always mentioned, the Satkaar Campaign is a Sangat led and inspired, grass-roots Gurdwara Reform Movement. It is the duty of every Sikh worldwide to recognise their obligation to Guru Granth Sahib Ji Maharaaj and to work relentlessly to ensure that no Beadbi takes place in our Gurdwaras and to our Saroops of Guru Granth Sahib Ji Maharaaj. We must all work collectively in a united manner to meet this overriding priority. Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh
  5. Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh! Sevadaars are currently in discussion with the Committee of the United Sikh Association Liverpool and local members of the Liverpool Sangat to understand what has actually happened. We humbly ask people not to “sensationalise” any rumours until there is full information available from all parties. Thank you Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh!
  6. Press Release & Sangat Update Amritsar, India 27 September 2011 www.SatkaarCampaign.blogspot.com Sri Akal Takht Sahib re-emphasizes Sandesh of 2006 Meeting of Singh Sahibaans at Akal Takht Sahib recognises work of Satkaar Campaign From left to right - Giani Mal Singh Granthi Darbar Sahib Amritsar, Jathedar Giani Iqbal Singh Takht Patna Sahib, Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh Akal Takht Sahib, Jathedar Giani Tirlochan Singh Takht Kesgarh Sahib and Jathedar Giani Balwant Singh Nandgarh Takht Damdama Sahib Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh! Satkaar Campaign Sevadaars are pleased to inform the UK Sikh Sangat that a meeting of five Singh Sahibaans at the Akal Takht Sahib on 26 September 2011 re-emphasized the Akal Takht’s Sandesh (edict) of 2006 prohibiting the consumption of meat and alcohol on all Gurdwara property. The Jathedar of the Akal Takht Singh Sahib Giani Gurbachan Singh confirmed in a telephone conversation with Satkaar Campaign Sevadaars on 26 September 2011 that the five Singh Sahibaans discussed in their meeting correspondence received from the Satkaar Campaign in the matter of the 2006 Sandesh and confirmed that no functions with meat or alcohol are permitted whatsoever on Gurdwara owned property. The Jathedar of the Akal Takht noted that Satkaar Campaign Sevadaars have been working to eradicate the sacrilege of party halls on Gurdwara premises in the UK and mandated management committees of Gurdwaras, Gurdwara Council’s, Panthic Jathebandees and Satkaar Campaign Sevadaars to work together to resolve the matter going forward. Satkaar Campaign Sevadaars have also been instructed to keep the secretariat of the Akal Takht up to date with progress on the issue and have been informed that should matters not be resolved satisfactorily the Akal Takht will take necessary action going forward. The discussion of the 2006 Sandesh at the Singh Sahibaans meeting at the Akal Takht on 26 September followed meetings between Satkaar Campaign Sevadaars and the Jathedar of the Akal Takht during his recent visit to the UK. Satkaar Campaign Sevadaars provided a detailed background of the beadbi (sacrilege) taking place at a handful of Gurdwaras in the UK permitting the consumption of meat and alcohol on Gurdwara premises and also referred to suggestions that some Gurdwara committees may propose to try to get around the Sandesh by donating or selling at gross under-value Gurdwara owned property to third-parties for the purpose of continuing with parties on such premises. The Jathedar of the Akal Takht has taken serious note of this matter and has instructed the Satkaar Campaign to inform the secretariat of the Akal Takht of any such proposed course of action for intervention and resolution by the Akal Takht. The Akal Takht Sahib meeting was attended by Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh Akal Takht Sahib Amritsar, Jathedar Giani Tirlochan Singh Takht Kesgarh Sahib, Jathedar Giani Balwant Singh Nandgarh Takht Damdama Sahib, Jathedar Giani Iqbal Singh Takht Patna Sahib and Giani Mal Singh Granthi Darbar Sahib Amritsar. Satkaar Campaign Sevadaars understand that besides discussing the matter of the 2006 Sandesh, the Singh Sahibaans also discussed a number of other instances of beadbi of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji in India and abroad including the recent cases of the deliberate desecration of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji’s Saroops in Udhampur-Nalla Ropar and Pilibhit Uttaranchal. The Singh Sahibaans resolved to instruct the SGPC to take up the matter with the Punjab and Central governments for tougher action against those guilty of such heinous acts including prosecuting offenders with homicide under section 302 of the Indian Penal Code taking into account that Sri Guru Granth Sahib has been accorded juristic status for particular purposes by the Supreme Court of India. The meeting also resolved to instruct the SGPC to hold meetings with committees of all Gurdwaras, Sikh institutions and scholars to discuss the maintenance of the sanctity of the Guru Granth Sahib in all Gurdwaras. In other developments the Singh Sahibaans sought details from Gurdwara committees in Malaysia about a case of one Sarban Singh who was reported to have prepared and sold in part the largest Saroop of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji at 13 feet and 700 kg and summoned to appear before the Akal Takht in the next meeting another NRI Surinder Singh Dhesi who was reported to have prepared Saroops of Guru Granth Sahib containing a number of typographical errors. Satkaar Campaign Sevadaars welcome the positive engagement of the Singh Sahibaans on matters of Satkaar for Guru Granth Sahib and we are humbled with the words of support and encouragement for the Satkaar Campaign received from the Akal Takht. The Satkaar Campaign Sevadaars remain committed to raising awareness of the gross sacrilege that a small minority of Gurdwara committees in the UK are continuing to commit by permitting the consumption of meat and alcohol on Gurdwara owned or related premises and we humbly request all Gurdwaras, Gurdwara Councils, Jathebandees and other Sikh organizations to work together to eradicate such practices from all Gurdwaras throughout the country. Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh!
  7. Press Release & Sangat Update UK, 3 September 2011 www.SatkaarCampaign.blogspot.com Anand Karaj at Banqueting Suites and Party at Gurdwara Hall re-arranged Anti-Sikh practice re-emerging in the UK Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh! Over the past two weeks, the UK Sikh Sangat has worked with wedding organisers, venues and family members to successfully re-arrange two weddings where the Sacred Saroop of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Maharaaj was to be taken to Banqueting Suites. The weddings were scheduled for 27th August and 4th September in Berkshire and Surrey. We are grateful to those who co-operated and realised the importance of maintaining Sikh Rehit Maryada (Sikh religious protocol) and avoiding further offence to Sikh sentiments. It is disheartening to realise that this anti-Sikh practice is re-emerging, the UK Sikh Sangat are urged to continue to promote wider awareness of the 1998 Hukamnama release by Sri Akal Takht Sahib forbidding the worldwide Sikh community to tolerate the Sacred Saroop of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji being taken to hotels, clubs, pubs, banqueting halls and other places where meat, alcohol & cigarettes are served and consumed. Additionally, the 2006 Sandesh states that Anand Karajs must be performed in Gurdwaras in accordance to Gurmat and the Panthic accepted Sikh Rehit Maryada. It is also the Sikh Granthi (priest) and Gurdwara Committee's responsiblity to be aware of Sikh Rehit Maryada and advise families against doing an Anand Karaj outside of the Gurdwara. As previously experienced, there are a small number of Granthis who are willing to take the sacred saroop of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji to party halls and banqueting suites for solely monetary gains. We have also received unconfirmed reports of an Anand Karaj that took place at a banqueting hall in Ilford, around 4 weeks ago, which we are currently investigating. Further, the Satkaar Campaign was informed about a booking for a party taken by a Gurdwara committee which had previously publically announced its decision to stop the consumption of meat and alcohol on Gurdwara property. Sevadaars undertook discussions and negotiations with the President and General Secretary of the Gurdwara committee. Through involvement from the Gurdwara Committee, this oversight was rectified and the family re-arranged their party to another venue. Again we would like to thank all those involved who co-operated and realised the importance of maintaining Sikh Rehit Maryada. The Satkaar Campaign's Sevadaars feel that it is now more important than ever that the UK Sikh Sangat unites to voice its concern that the authority of Sri Akal Takht Sahib is being undermined and Satkaar for Sri Guru Granth Ji Maharaaj is deteriorating. As we have said all along, it is the duty of every Sikh to be alert on these issues. Collectively, nothing can stop the UK Sangat on this issue, since Gurmat is firmly on our side. Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh!
  8. International Sikh Conference Update Press Release & Sangat Update Birmingham UK. 25 August 2011 www.SatkaarCampaign.blogspot.com Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh! Hundreds of Sikhs gathered at the Sikh Channel studios on 21st August 2011 in Birmingham, UK to hold a live telecast Panthic conference on the horrific Beadbi (sacrilege) of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji's Saroops in Udhampur Nalla, Punjab last week and the on-going Beadbi which also takes place in India and the UK. Representatives from the major UK Panthic Jathebandiaans attended as well as members of the UK Sikh Sangat. The majority of the attendees of the conference communicated an overwhelming passion to stand up to the issues of Beadbi within the UK, especially the issue of the gross beadbi regarding Gurdwara Halls permitting meat, alcohol and parties. Some members of the UK Sikh Sangat expressed a frustration built up over the years where a feeling that Jathebhandi leaders in the UK may not have done enough to address these issues of beadbi. The telecast highlighted a strong voice of emotion and hurt felt from the Beadbi towards Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Maharaaj, and it was clear that the general UK Sangat contributing to the show unanimously supported the following action points: 1. To educate all Sikhs about Guru Sahib Ji and the Satkaar and Seva needed in Gurdwaras in the UK and Punjab 2. To unite and further the grassroots Satkaar Campaign Gurdwara reform movement to ensure that all Beadbi in the UK is stopped immediately, so that the UK can be an ideal example of Satkaar for Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Maharaaj 3. Support active Gursikhs in India with resources, cash etc. whatever they need to continue and enhance their fight to stop the Beadbi of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji's Saroops. The Satkaar Campaign's Sevadaars feel that it is now more important than ever that the UK Sikh Sangat unites to voice its concern that the authority of Akaal Takhat Sahib is being undermined and Satkaar for Sri Guru Granth Ji Maharaaj is deteriorating. As we have said all along, it is the duty of every Sikh to be alert on these issues. Collectively, nothing can stop the UK Sangat on this issue, since Gurmat is firmly on our side. Further, we have one final Benti (request) to all Panthic Jathebandiaan in the UK: whilst we recognise and thank you for the ongoing support you have provided to the Satkaar Campaign whenever requested, we would humbly request that you each take a PRO-ACTIVE approach towards maintaining Satkaar for Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, rather than a RE-ACTIVE one. We are convinced that, with Guru Ji's blessings, all Beadbi relating to Gurdwara party halls can be stopped in a matter of days if the offending Gurdwara committees get the firm and united message from all UK Panthic Jathebandiaan that Beadbi will no longer be tolerated in the UK. The Satkaar Campaign's Sevadaars are always willing to speak to, and work with, any individual or Jathebandi, at any time to further the Satkaar Campaign agenda. We look forward to hearing from such Panthic Jathebandiaan in the UK so that we can collectively work together to stop Beadbi happening in the UK. Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh!
  9. Sangat Update 8 August 2011 www.SatkaarCampaign.blogspot.com Mahaan Parchariks of the Sikh Panth commend the Satkaar Campaign Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh! Over the last month, the Satkaar Campaign has focused on educating the Sangat on the beadbi that happens in the UK towards Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. The Satkaar Campaign's sevadaars have partaken in a number of Sikhi Camps and Gurdwara Lectures and have also met with mahaan parchariks of the Sikh Panth such as Baba Ranjit Singh Ji Dhardrianwale and Baba Bajlit Singh Ji Dadu Sahibwale. Baba Ranjit Singh Ji and Baba Baljit Singh Ji have given their full support to the campaign to stop meat, alcohol and tobacco being served and consumed on Gurdwara property. They will highlight this beadbi within their kathas in the coming weeks and will discuss this problem with other Jathebandis in order to put pressure on those Gurdwara Committees to stop who allow this beadbi to happen. 11. Press Release and Sangat Update Dudley, UK – 16 June 2011 www.SatkaarCampaign.blogspot.com Dudley National Anti-Beadbi Rally media coverage and the Satkaar Campaign going forward Waheguru Jee Ka Khalsa Waheguru Jee Kee Fateh! The Sangat will be aware that there was widespread coverage of the National Anti-Beadbi Rally in Dudley on Saturday 28 May 2011, not only in the Punjabi media but also in the mainstream/English local and national media. The coverage was mixed with both positive and negative reporting of the rally. We attach below a flavour of the reporting with three articles from the Punjab Times, The Asian Today and the BBC News website. The most disappointing element of most of the coverage was the failure to provide sufficient background or context as to the reason why large numbers of the UK Sangat (on only 12 hours notice) came to the rally, the misrepresentation of the rally as being violent and disorderly when in fact it began and remained in large part peaceful in nature and, in a minority of cases, the sensationalised reporting of the rally in which all Sikhs who attended were labelled as "militants" or "fundamentalists". We attach a letter (see below) that we have written to the BBC regarding its coverage of the rally. The Satkaar Campaign Sevadaars were in dialogue with the media before the rally and have been subsequently too but realise that further and more sustained engagement is needed to effectively communicate the aims of the Satkaar Campaign to the Sikh and wider community. However, we also appreciate that certain sections of the media have only been, and will continue only to be, interested in reporting sensationalised stories, no matter how much we engage with them, as this produces a more interesting story for them. No matter how much the Sikh community dislikes this, we can continue to expect this from certain sections of the English media until the Sikh community more generally improves its influence within the media. However, we would hope and expect "Sikh" media to be more responsible and provide balanced coverage (which in certain circumstances, was not the case). Since the Dudley National Anti-Beadbi Rally took place, the Satkaar Campaign Sevadaars have been overwhelmed with: (i) the positive support and encouragement that the general UK Sangat has provided, and (ii) the Panthic unity and momentum that is continuing to build amongst the UK Sangat to ensure that the 2006 Sandesh is applied in all UK Gurdwaras. Going forward, the Satkaar Campaign, which is led and guided by the UK Sangat, will continue to remain focused on raising awareness of the gross sacrilege that a small minority of Gurdwara committees in the UK are continuing to commit by permitting the consumption of meat and alcohol on Gurdwara owned or related premises. The Satkaar Campaign will continue working positively with all Sikh communities to PEACEFULLY eradicate the consumption of meat and alcohol from all Gurdwara premises throughout the country. The Satkaar Campaign has learnt many lessons from the Dudley rally on how to improve things for the future, and undoubtedly, different approaches will be necessitated going forward. As it is a Sangat-led Campaign, the Sevadaars continue to welcome the Sangat's constructive feedback and positive engagement in respect of the Satkaar Campaign and issues relating to the Satkaar of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Maharaaj. With Guru Sahib Ji's blessings and the continued support of the Sangat, to date, 5 Gurdwaras have stopped meat, alcohol, tobacco, dancing and parties at halls owned by or linked to such Gurdwaras since the Sangat collectively did an Ardaas on this issue at Grays Gurdwara on 16 October 2010. The Satkaar Campaign Sevadaars are in continued dialogue with further Gurdwara committees too, and we hope to bring further positive news to the UK Sangat in the near future. Waheguru Jee Ka Khalsa Waheguru Jee Kee Fateh! Letter sent to BBC Complaints 12 June 2011 BBC Complaints Dear Sirs We write in response to your coverage of a rally attended by members of the Sikh community at the Sikh Cultural Centre in Dudley on 28 May 2011 specifically your article titled "Pc and two others hurt in Sikh cultural centre protest" which you published on the BBC news website at http://www.bbc.co.uk...ingham-13587198 We were disappointed with your coverage and concerned about the following errors, omissions and inaccuracies – 1. Your article misrepresented the nature of the rally which remained largely peaceful and was attended by Sikh men, women and children including representatives of various Sikh Gurdwaras and Sikh organisations from across the country. The rally lasted approximately six hours and involved those attending sitting down in front of the Sikh Cultural Centre and reciting prayers to raise awareness of the gross sacrilege that was taking place at the Centre. The vast majority of those who attended remained peaceful. Your coverage of the rally can be contrasted with the way you have reported other protests for example the student protests in London earlier this year in which students were protesting in respect of increased tuition fees. These protests involved considerable violence and damage to property but you were rightly clear in differentiating the majority of peaceful protesters from the small handful that caused disorder. 2. Your article failed to mention that the element of disorder which broke out at the rally followed deliberate goading and provocation of the protesters by those attending the party at the Sikh Cultural Centre. Prior to that point the rally had been entirely peaceful with those attending sitting down and reciting prayers as mentioned. This is a factually accurate statement which has subsequently been confirmed to representatives of the Sikh community by West Midlands Police. 3. Your article failed to make clear the reason why members of the Sikh community attended the rally. Specifically you failed to mention that the Guru Nanak Singh Sabha (GNSS) Gurdwara Dudley which owns and administers the Sikh Cultural Centre had booked a party at the Centre on that day at which the consumption of meat and alcohol was going to be permitted. Your article further failed to mention that the consumption of meat, alcohol and other intoxicants in premises owned or related to a Sikh Gurdwara is a grossly sacrilegious act going against the fundamental tenants of the Sikh religion. Your article failed to mention that the rally had be called to raise awareness of the Sandesh (edict) issued by the Akal Takht (the supreme temporal authority of the Sikh religion) in 2006 which confirms that parties with meat and alcohol are prohibited on premises owned or related to a Gurdwara. 4. Your article stated by way of a quote that "a majority of the trustees are saying that at present there is no links between the temple and the community centre and it's a separate organisation". This is a highly misleading and inaccurate statement as there is irrefutable evidence that the Sikh Cultural Centre is an inexorable part of the Sikh Gurdwara in Dudley having been bought, administered and maintained by the Gurdwara. Your article failed to mention that the trustees and members of the management committee of the GNSS Gurdwara present at the rally confirmed in writing that the Centre was owned by the GNSS Gurdwara. 5. Your article failed to provide the background or context which led up to the rally. Specifically you failed to mention the numerous attempts made over a period of five months by a wide range of other Sikh Gurdwaras and Sikh organisations from the region and beyond to initiate dialogue with the GNSS Gurdwara management committee in respect of the use of the Sikh Cultural Centre. These attempts were made directly and by way of the West Midlands Police but all such attempts at dialogue were rebuffed with the GNSS Gurdwara refusing to even meet with members of the Sikh community. 6. Your article also failed to provide the background to the booking of the party at the Sikh Cultural Centre on 28 May 2011. The initial party booking was made by a family in respect of a pre-wedding function. A peaceful rally was originally called by the Sikh community to take place outside the Sikh Cultural Centre on that date to raise awareness of the sacrilege that was to occur in the sacred properties of the Gurdwara and how this is offending and hurting Sikh sentiments. However, members of the family who had booked the party met with representatives of the Sikh community on 25 May 2011 and agreed to find an alternative venue and cancel the party. Having found an alternative venue the family duly cancelled its party booking at the Sikh Cultural Centre. This in turn led to the Sikh community cancelling the original rally. However, for some reason which can only be interpreted as a defiant and deliberate attempt to play with the sentiments of the Sikh community, another party booking was arranged at the Sikh Cultural Centre by the GNSS Gurdwara to take place on 28 May 2011. This was confirmed by West Midlands Police to Sikh community leaders on the evening of Friday 27 May 2011. It is widely believed that the booking was made by a committee member of the GNSS Gurdwara itself although this has not been confirmed. 7. As far as we are aware you did not prior to publishing your article contact the organisers of the rally or representatives of other Sikh organisations who attended the rally. If you had done so you would have no doubt been made aware of the above issues and the background to the rally. As a national and publically funded broadcaster the BBC has a duty to ensure the accuracy of its reporting and not to mislead the wider public by inaccurate or incomplete reporting of events. You may be aware that your coverage was followed by grossly distorted and sensationalised reporting of the rally in the local and national press which used terms such as "militant Sikhs" to describe those who attended the rally. All the above has disappointed and frustrated the wider Sikh community and we trust that you will investigate the concerns raised. If you have any queries please feel to contact us. Our contact details and further information about us and the rally in Dudley can be found on our website http://www.satkaarca...gn.blogspot.com We look forward to your response. Yours faithfully Satkaar Campaign BBC Letter 12 Jun 2011.pdf
  12. www.SatkaarCampaign.blogspot.com Questions from the Mainstream Media regarding the Protest held at Dudley on 28 May 2011 1. What do you make of the term 'militant sikhs' being used to describe your group across much of the mainstream media? The Satkaar Campaign is just that: a campaign. It is not a formal group or organisation. It is neither a registered charity nor a private association, nor does it have any formal office or office-bearers. The Satkaar Campaign is a UK Sangat (community) led grassroots Gurdwara (Sikh religious place of worship) reform movement focussed on preventing the gross sacrilege of parties, meat, alcohol and tobacco being permitted on the holy Gurdwara premises or any premises funded with the Sangat's donations which is against the basic tenants of the Sikh faith and specifically against the Sandesh (edict) issued by the Akal Takht (supreme temporal authority of the Sikh religion) in 2006. The Satkaar Campaign strongly disagrees and takes offence at the term 'militant Sikhs' which has been used to describe members the Sikh community who attended the rally in Dudley last Saturday. The rally was attended by approximately 500 Sikhs young and old alike including men, women and children from across the country. The attendees included representatives from leading Sikh Gurdwaras in the midlands. The Sikh men, women and children who attended the rally were exercising their democratic right to peacefully protest. It is sad and hurtful that terms such as "militants" and "extremists" have been used by the mainstream media. This is in contrast to the way that same media has reported other protests for example the student protests in London this year in which the students were protesting in respect of increased tuition fees. These protests involved considerable violence and damage to property, smashed windows, attacks on the Police, graffiti on walls and attempts to break into Government buildings but the media did not describe all protesters as militants or extremists. Rather the media differentiated the majority of peaceful protesters from the "small minority of troublemakers" and the "small hand of people that caused disorder". The rally in Dudley lasted approximately six hours and remained largely peaceful and involved those attending sitting down in front of the Sikh Cultural Centre and reciting prayers to raise awareness of the gross sacrilege that was taking place. The vast majority of those who attended remained peaceful. 2. Did you envisage the protest would turn violent? No. There was unfortunately a small element of disorder which was isolated in nature. Whilst we consider that there was considerable provocation and goading by the attendees of the party which led to isolated instances of disorder, the the Satkaar Campaign does NOT condone any such behaviour and is, and will always remain, a PEACEFUL movement that makes all attempts to resolve issues through raising awareness and dialogue. Representatives of the Satkaar Campaign and other Gurdwaras remained in full dialogue with the West Midlands Police before and during the rally. All attempts were made by the Satkaar Campaign and Sikh leaders in the Midlands Gurdwara to highlight that the protest was a peaceful event, a peaceful protocol was released in advance and distributed on the day a copy of which can be found on our website. There were also several discussions in advance on the Sikh television media. The majority of attendees focused on chanting and reciting prayers. Continuous attempts were made by the majority who attended the rally to maintain calm and focus during the rally. A similar rally held at Grays Sikh Community Centre in Essex on 16 October 2010 in which the Satkaar Campaign issued the same protocol was entirely peaceful in nature and passed off without any incident. 3. How long have you been in conversation with the Sikh Cultural Centre about the consumption of meat and alcohol on the premises? The Akal Takht Sandesh was issued in April 2006. This edict provides clear guidance to global Sikhs that buildings owned or associated with Gurdwaras must not serve alcohol or meat. All Gurdwara's have been sent a copy of the Sandesh and are aware of it. The Satkaar Campaign made contact with the Guru Nanak Singh Sabha (GNSS) Dudley Gurdwara committee (which owns and runs the Sikh Cultural Centre) back in January 2011. Concerned Sikhs from the UK sought to meet with GNSS Dudley Gurdwara committee several times in the last five months leading up to the protest. A coalition of the leading Gurdwara's and Gurdwara Council's sought to meet with the Dudley Gurdwara committee on 8 April 2011 by way of a meeting arranged through the West Midlands Police. The Dudley committee refused to sit down with the representatives of those other Gurdwara's on the spurious basis that there was no agenda for the meeting. The Dudley Gurdwara representatives in the presence of the West Midlands Police promised to hold a meeting with those other Gurdwara representatives within a week but subsequently refused to sit down to discuss the matter with anyone. All attempts at dialogue and negotiation were made with the GNSS Dudley committee by the Satkaar Campaign and other Sikh community leaders from the midlands. The Sikh community had no alternative but to peacefully protest against the party booking on 28 May 2011 following the refusal of the Dudley committee to even sit down to talk about the matter. 4. What was the attitude of those in charge of the Sikh Cultural Centre to your simple request? The attitude of the GNSS Dudley Gurdwara committee can only be described as deliberately defiant and an attempt to play with the sentiments of the Sikh community. The GNSS Dudley committee should have at the very least sat down to talk about the matter with the representatives of the other Sikh Gurdwara's in the midlands region who had sought dialogue with the committee with a view to resolving the matter of the Sikh Cultural Centre and avoiding the need for the Sikh community to protest. As you may be aware from our press release of 29 May 2011 the initial party booking made for 28 May 2011 was made by a family in respect of a pre-wedding function. A peaceful rally was originally called by the Sikh community to take place outside the Sikh Cultural Centre on that date to raise awareness of the sacrilege that was to occur in the sacred properties of the Gurdwara and how this is offending and hurting Sikh sentiments. However members of the family who had booked the party on 28 May 2011 contacted representatives of the Guru Nanak Gurdwara West Bromwich to arrange an emergency meeting with representatives of the local Sikh community. The meeting took place on 25 May 2011 and was attended by representatives from various Sikh Gurdwaras in the West Midlands. At the meeting the family members explained that they were aware of the rally and that they had been told by representatives of the GNSS Dudley Gurdwara that the protesters were only a handful of "fundamentalist" Sikhs wishing to stop all Sikhs having parties in Dudley. However, having understood the nature of the rally, which was merely against such parties taking place on Gurdwara owned or related premises in line with principles and edits of the Sikh faith, they too agreed that hosting the party at the Sikh Cultural Centre in Dudley was against the principles of the Sikh religion. The family members explained that subject to finding an alternative venue at short notice they would be prepared to cancel their party. Having found an alternative venue the family duly cancelled its party booking at the Sikh Cultural Centre. This in turn led to a press release on 25 May 2011, cancelling the original peaceful rally. However, for some reason which can only be interpreted as a defiant and deliberate attempt to play with the sentiments of the Sikh community, another party booking was arranged at the Sikh Cultural Centre by the GNSS Dudley Gurdwara to take place on 28 May 2011. This was confirmed by West Midlands Police to Sikh community leaders on the evening of Friday 27 May 2011. It is widely believed that the booking was made by a committee member of the GNSS Dudley Gurdwara itself although this has not been confirmed. 5. Do you think your campaign is one supported by a majority of British Sikhs? The Satkaar Campaign has widespread support amongst the mainstream of Sikh Gurdwaras, Sikh organisations and the grass roots of the Sikh community. The Satkaar Campaign is UK Sangat (community) led reform movement. The Satkaar Campaign has worked closely with a number of Gurdwara's and Sikh organisations based in the midlands and beyond in relation to the Dudley matter. 6. West Midlands Police have launched an investigation into the weekends events and are looking to identify individuals relating to the violent outbursts. Will you work with the police in identifying those individuals? The Satkaar Campign was in full liaison with the West Midlands Police prior to and during the rally. We understand from media reports that the Police has launched an investigation regarding the weekends events and look forward to the outcome of the same in due course. 7. What's next for the campaign? The Satkaar Campaign will remain focused on raising awareness of the gross sacrilege that a small minority of Gurdwara committees in the UK are continuing to commit by permitting the consumption of meat and alcohol on Gurdwara owned or related premises. The Satkaar Campaign looks forward to working positively with all Sikh communities to eradicate such practices from all Gurdwara premises throughout the country.
  13. Press Release and Sangat Update Dudley, UK - 29 May 2011 www.SatkaarCampaign.blogspot.com Dudley Gurdwara agrees to implement Akal Takht Sandesh in Sikh Cultural Centre Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh! Over 500 Sikhs from across the country gathered outside the Sikh Cultural Centre in Dudley which is part of the Guru Nanak Singh Sabha (GNSS) Gurdwara (Sikh place of worship) to attend a PEACEFUL rally against the committee and trustees of the Gurdwara. The peaceful rally took place after months of attempted discussions and dialogue with the GNSS Dudley Gurdwara by both the Satkaar Campaign and senior leaders of the UK Sikh community from various other Gurdwaras in the West Midlands. Attempts were continuously made to persuade the GNSS Dudley Gurdwara committee to follow Gurmat Maryada (Sikh code of conduct) and specifically the 2006 Sandesh (edict) issued by Sri Akal Takht Sahib (the supreme temporal authority in the Sikh religion) which prohibits the consumption of meat and alcohol at any premises which belong to or are related to a Sikh Gurdwara. The history of this entire episode and the GNSS Dudley Gurdwara committee's refusal to meet with representatives of the Sikh community along with details of the 2006 Sandesh can be read of on our blog (www.SatkaarCampaign.blogspot.com). It was brought to the attention of the UK Sangat (Sikh Community) that the GNSS Gurdwara committee had taken a booking for a party, which would permit alcohol and meat, to be held at the Sikh Cultural Centre on Saturday 28 May 2011. A PEACEFUL rally was originally called by the UK Sangat to take place outside the Sikh Cultural Centre on that date to raise awareness of those few Sikh Gurdwara committees who allow such sacrilege to occur in the sacred properties of the Gurdwara and how this is offending and hurting Sikh sentiments. Members of the family who had originally booked the party at the Sikh Cultural Centre in Dudley on 28 May 2011 contacted representatives of the Guru Nanak Gurdwara West Bromwich to arrange an emergency meeting with representatives of the local Sikh community. The meeting took place on 25 May 2011 and was attended by representatives from various Sikh Gurdwaras in the West Midlands. At the meeting the family members explained that they were aware of the rally and that they had been told by representatives of the Dudley GNSS Gurdwara that the protesters wished to stop all Sikhs having parties in Dudley. However, having understood the nature of the rally, which was merely against such parties taking place on Gurdwara premises, they too agreed that hosting the party at the Sikh Cultural Centre in Dudley was against the principles of the Sikh religion. The family members explained that subject to finding an alternative venue at short notice they would be prepared to cancel their party. Having found an alternative venue the family duly cancelled its party booking at the Sikh Cultural Centre. This in turn led to the original peaceful rally being cancelled by the UK Sangat after consensus with Sikh community leaders and other Sikh organisations. However, for some reason which can only be interpreted as a defiant and deliberate attempt to play with the sentiments of the Sikh community, another party booking was arranged at the Sikh Cultural Centre by the GNSS Dudley Gurdwara to take place on 28 May 2011. This was confirmed by West Midlands Police to Sikh community leaders on the evening of Friday 27 May. It is widely believed that the booking was made by a committee member of the GNSS Dudley Gurdwara although this has not been confirmed. A PEACEFUL rally was called at short notice on Friday evening to take place the following day outside the Sikh Cultural Centre. A protocol was released for all attendees to observe; (http://satkaarcampaign.blogspot.com/2011/05/protocol-for-peaceful-anti-beadbi-rally.html) Despite such short notice the rally was attended by approximately 500 Sikhs young and old alike including men, women and children from across the country. The attendees included representatives from various other Sikh Gurdwaras in the Midlands. Following various discussions and attempts at mediation during the rally, representatives of the GNSS Dudley Gurdwara management committee and trust, present at the Sikh Cultural Centre, agreed to sit down with representatives of other Sikh Gurdwaras and other Sikh community leaders. Following discussions between them in the presence of the West Midlands Police, the GNSS Dudley Gurdwara representatives accepted that their actions had infuriated the sentiments of the Sikh Community for which they were apologetic. The representatives confirmed that the Sikh Cultural Centre was indeed part of the GNSS Dudley Gurdwara estate and that it would remain so. They crucially accepted that the GNSS Dudley Gurdwara would now implement the 2006 Akal Takht Sandesh by way of prohibiting parties with meat and alcohol at the Sikh Cultural Centre and all other premises belonging or related to the GNSS Dudley Gurdwara with immediate effect. The GNSS Dudley Gurdwara representatives agreed to sign a statement to such effect and to confirm the same in writing to the Akal Takht Sahib in Amritsar India within seven days. The full statement signed by the GNSS Gurdwara trustees and committee representatives can be read below. The Satkaar Campaign would like to express our thanks to the representatives of the GNSS Dudley Gurdwara for the courageous and historical decision that they have taken in difficult circumstances. We are also thankful to the representatives of the various Gurdwaras and Sikh organisations for their involvement on this issue, and we believe that their engagement made a foremost contribution to resolving the GNSS Dudley issue. The rally remained largely peaceful where Sikh men, women and children sat down in front of the Sikh Cultural Centre and chanted and recited prayers to raise awareness of the gross sacrilege that was taking place. Whilst the vast majority who attended remained peaceful and engaged in chanting and reciting prayers there was unfortunately a small element of disorder. The Satkaar Campaign does NOT condone any such behaviour and is, and will always remain, a PEACEFUL movement that makes all attempts to resolve issues through raising awareness and dialogue. Representatives of the Satkaar Campaign and other Gurdwaras remained in full dialogue with the West Midlands Police before and during the rally. We have one humble Benti (appeal and request) to make to the worldwide Sangat: we request the Sangat to increase our Bani/Simran abhiyaas for the Chardikala of the Khalsa Panth to become united in our thinking and collectively resolve these issues through PEACEFUL means. We further humbly ask those few Gurdwara committee who permit meat and alcohol onto Gurdwara properties to adhere to the 2006 Akal Takht Sahib Sandesh. Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh!
