  2. I feel that Basic information on Sikhs must be made available in regional language. Here's a good initiative by Sikh Coalition http://www.sikhcoalition.org/about-sikhs/the-sikh-brochures
  3. I agree they should be proactive not reactive. 3HO did translate Gurbani into foreign languages, check out http://www.sikher.com/# Don't know how accurate they are or whether they have been approved by sgpc scholars. Anyway some organization should take initiative to translate Gurbani in Local as well foreign languages. Just look at Chinese Bibis Gurdwara Tour video. It clearly shows that there is a need or demand for Chinese translation & transliteration. In fact some techies should develop & upload Gurmukhi on Google & Bing Translators.

  6. Ex-school principal translates Guru Granth Sahib in Oriya, seeks suggestions Usmeet Kaur, Hindustan Times Amritsar, December 28, 2014 Bhubaneswar-based Sadhna Patri, who has strong inclination towards Sikh culture and the Gurbani since her childhood, has translated the Guru Granth Sahib in Oriya. For the translation project, Sadhna even gave away the post of principal at a Gangtok-based school and returned to Bhubaneshwar, where collaborated with her family friend Sakir Singh for proofreading and editing of the scripture. On Saturday, she was in the Holy City to meet Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh and Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) members to show her three-year-long translation work and to seek their suggestions. Translating the Guru Granth Sahib in Oriya is a huge responsibility and it is important to get it right, while staying ethically correct. I believe in following the right protocol so that no one can raise a finger at my work later. Therefore, a final nod from the Akal Takht is very important, Sadhna told Hindustan Times here on Saturday. Even though I belong to a Hindu Oriya family, it doesnt restrict me from loving other religions. The founder of the Sikhism Guru Nanak Dev (the first Sikh guru) always emphasised on humanity and preached love for all, said Sadhna. The Guru Granth Sahib comprises Gurbani written by Bhagat Kabir and Bhagat Naam Dev, then how my religion can be a barrier in loving the Gurbani, she said. She was in Class 3 when turbaned Sikh men and Sikh women attracted her, every time she got a glance of a Sikh man or a woman her curiosity compelled her to know about them, their history and culture. Sadhna has always been inclined towards the Gurbani, which she calls sweet and soulful. I started reading about the Sikh culture and the Gurbani at an early age; however, a sudden transformation occurred in 2008 when I wrote Suraj Prakash in Oriya, which includes life saga of all ten Sikh gurus and Sikh history. The work has been received well by people in Odhisa, she recounted. This further encouraged me to tell the Oriya people about the teachings of this beautiful and pragmatic religion, for which Oriya translation of the granth was a must. I started in 2011, she added. Sadhna feels translations of the Guru Granth Sahib in various languages is a must, as confining the scripture to Punjabi will restrict its understanding among various communities of India and the world. Once the Guru Granth Sahib is translated in Oriya, native Oriya speakers in parts of West Bengal, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Andhra Pradesh will be able to learn and understand it, she concluded. 13. Breaking News: Malaysia floods - Kuala Krai Gurdwara submerged The Gurdwara Sahib in the small Malaysian town of Kuala Krai was submerged in a flash flood yesterday that have hit a number of states in Malaysia. The 80-year old Gurdwara, serving two Sikh families and more than a dozen foreign workers from Punjab, was under 50-feet of water as of today. The Malaysian Gurdwaras Council (MGC) have pledged an immediate RM3,000 in emergency relief funding for the Gurdwara. Gurmukh Singh, president of Kuala Krai Gurdwara Sahib management committee, said this was the worst flooding to hit the town in more than a decade. The water levels rose very fast. We moved everything we could to the top floor, but water kept on rising. By night time, in the pitch of darkness, there was little we could do. We only managed to get a boat late that night to get the few of us still stranded at the Gurdwara to safe grounds, said Gurmukh Singh. The Gurdwara is now under some 50ft water, he added. Kuala Krai is about 70km from Kota Bharu, Kelantan, and 380km from Kuala Lumpur. Gurmukh Singh, a retired police sub-inspector who had served more than three decades in Kelantan, is also the president of the Gurdwara Sahib Kota Bharu management committee. He lives in the Kuala Krai gurdwara. Aside from Kuala Krai, the two others Gurdwaras in Kelantan are in Kota Bharu and Tumpat. At the moment, both Gurdwaras have been spared from flooding, he said. Meanwhile, MGC president Jagir Singh said the council has approved RM3,000 in emergency funding for the flood-hit Gurdwara and will mobilise restoration efforts once the flood subsides, including coordinating fund raising. We are in touch with Gurmukh Singh. We will asses the damage once the water recedes, said Jagir Singh. Source - https://www.facebook.com/SikhChannel840#

  15. UK News: Aberdeen Sikhs join with oil workers to fill up city food bank Members of the north-easts Sikh community last night teamed up with local oil and gas workers to provide food to the regionss less fortunate. A packed Christmas food bank was set up at the Seaton Community Education Centre in Aberdeen to help some of the citys most deprived people. The event was organised by Mandeep Singh Khalsa of the north-easts small but passionate Sikh community. The 28-year-old, of Cove, said the food bank brought the Sikh community one step closer to setting up a Langar a common kitchen and canteen for all in the north-east. The offshore consultant, with help from pal John Welsh, of Wood Group, gathered a huge amount of food donations for locals to stock up on for the festive period. Tea, coffee, sugar and oatmeal were among the food items donated, along with baby food, milk and nappies for parents struggling to make ends meet this Christmas. In Sikh cultures a Langar is a common kitchen and canteen area where food is served to visitors regardless of background. Langars are usually set up in a Gurdwara a Sikh place of worship and only serve vegetarian food so that all people regardless of beliefs and diets can eat together. Mr Khalsa, who is originally from London but whose family is from India, hopes one can be set up in Aberdeen next year, and visualises running a monthly curry night for the citys hungry. Mr Khalsa added: The Sikh community in Aberdeen is quite small but full of passion. We havent got a Sikh temple at the moment, but everybodys a good cook, all of our wives and myself, we cook quite well. Even without a temple we thought we would do a curry around Aberdeen. I contacted the guys at Wood Group about a food bank. We want to do this every month. Sikhs have been part of the British culture for more than 150 years. We have been here since the end of World War II. It is quite poignant that we are getting together to do something for our community. I have to give credit to the guys at Wood Group, Talisman-Sinopec, Sikh Relief and DNDK Limited. It is an interfaith thing. Theres going to be about 10 to 15 of us getting together every month. We are hoping to get a liaison as well with the council. We hope to show theres no difference between people in India and the UK. We should be blind to colour, race, religion and any other difference were all the same, and love Santa. Source - https://www.facebook.com/SikhChannel840

  19. DataWind's Suneet Singh Tuli recognized at Buckingham Palace London, December 22, 2014 (Yes Punjab News) Suneet Singh Tuli, a Sikh IT businessman and representative of EcoSikh, was praised at a luncheon at Buckingham Palace. Suneet Singh Tuli, who was there to attend a lunch hosted by Buckingham Palace in celebration of faith-based environmentalism, was recognized for his efforts to make technology available to the poor in the world and for his support for environmental initiatives. Tuli has recently joined the board of EcoSikh, a Washington-based international Sikh environmental organization. His Royal Highness Prince Philip hosted a celebratory reception and lunch at Buckingham Palace. The Alliance of Religions and Conservation (ARC), a 19-year-old organization founded by HRH Prince Philip, had gathered representatives of world faiths as well representatives of secular bodies like the World Bank, the Rabo Bank Foundation and The Nature Conservancy at the celebration. Martin Palmer, the Secretary General of ARC, in a special mention recognized the contribution of Tuli for his innovation to provide low-cost technology to underprivileged youth in India and Africa. Dr. Rajwant Singh, President of EcoSikh, introduced Suneet Tuli to HRH Prince Philip, and highlighted his passion to be involved in environmental causes through EcoSikh. He explained how Tulis tablet and platform, which is sold for under $40, can change the game for the poor youth in the developing world. We are excited that a person with such energy and wide horizon is becoming a warrior for Mother Earth. His technological inventions can be used to educate masses about the cause of nature preservation as well, Dr Singh said. Tuli, 44, is the co-founder and CEO of DataWind, cited for the development of Aakash and UbiSlate tablets, also known as the world's lowest cost tablet computers. His low-cost tablet computer was designed to empower billions of people with access to affordable computing and Internet access. The tablet was launched in 2012 at the United Nations by UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon. Forbes Magazine named Tuli as one of the world's top 15 classroom revolutionaries in its 2012 Impact 15 list of people around the world who harness technology to change education. Tuli received the Intelligent Community Visionary award of the Year for 2014. MIT in its Tech Review of 2014 recognized DataWind as one of the Smartest Companies. Tuli expressed his concern for the degradation of environment in India and elsewhere, especially the consequences of climate change. He said, "It is important that faiths inspire its adherents to take action on this critical issue. We are impressed with HRH Prince Philip's commitment to environmental preservation and wild life protection. The world needs such visionary leaders who can take a bold stand on these issues. At the lunch at Buckingham Palace, ARC highlighted the four autonomous new environmental movements, which represent the cause of faith-based environmentalism. These initiatives were launched by ARC and as well as EcoSikh, they include Faithful Farming - a conservation agriculture project in Africa; Faith in WASH - a program to work with faiths to promote the availability of fresh water and good hygiene practices in schools worldwide; and a new ARC partnership with The Nature Conservancy. Alongside this, ARCs well-established China program will continue in partnership with The Valley Foundation, a Dutch NGO. Key invitees at the Palace included: Brian Pilkington (Chair of ARCs Board of Trustees since 1996) Raffaello Cervigni (lead environmental economist for the Africa region of the World Bank) Yuan Fan (Deputy General Manager of China Daily, UK) Master GE Huifang (from the Loguan Daoist Temple) Pierre L. van Hedel (Managing Director of the Rabobank Foundation, the social fund of the large Dutch bank) Olav Kjørven (Director of the Public Partnerships Division at UNICEF) Gopal Patel (Director of The Bhumi Project, an initiative that works with the international Hindu community to raise awareness about environmental concerns) Allerd Stikker (CEO of the Valley Foundation) Dr. Rajwant Singh (Founder and Chairman of the Sikh Council on Religion and Education (SCORE) who helped launch EcoSikh in 2009) Jean-Pierre Sweerts (Chairman of the Board of DOB Foundation) Bishop Walter S. 21. Musical Project Set to Release 1 Million Copies of Sikh Teachings By Priya Kaur @pripri619 | December 19, 2014 A worldwide project, known as 35 Akhree, or Painti Akhree, is garnering support from various global organizations for its mission to educate Sikhs and others about their religious teachings and language. Although Painti Akhree was originally used in Punjab, India, the language has now crossed the frontiers of its homeland, and Gurmukhi has accompanied them everywhere. The word Gurmukhi means from the mouth of the Guru, but as generations pass, the Punjabi language has been taught less and less within the younger generations. Reaffirmed by the U.K. Research Center on Languages, within in the next 30-40 years, the language of Punjabi will be a rarity. In order to spread the teachings of Gurmukhi, the project will release an album with 10 songs to teach the youth basics about their religion. The copies will be audio CDs, along with DVDs, and all soundtracks are free of cost, to reach as many Sikhs as possible worldwide. The tracks on the songs have been sung by Bollwood singers, like Kavita Seth and Sona Mohanpatra. The songs are set to educate the youth about the 10 Gurus, 5 Pyare, 4 Sahebzade, 5 Kakaar, along with gender equality, importance of Aanad Karaj and Seva. Harmandeep Kaur Randhawa, a reality TV show producer in India, and one of the original members on the project, spoke to me in further detail about their mission at the Euless Gurdwara Sikh Sangat in Euless, Texas. At the projects core, Randhawas said it is targeted to help educate Sikhs of all ages around the world about their religion through music. Music is something people can relate to universally, and that is why their goal is to release one million copies of the album on the same day, making it a world record. There has never been an international record released all over the world, on the same day, not even Jennifer Lopez has released an album worldwide in the same day, Randhawa said. She said she jumped on board with the project for many reasons. Being a Sikh, I wanted to do my seva in a way that I could reach out to as many people as possible, and this is a way I thought I could get everyone involved, Randhawa said. This is a peoples project. This is for the people. The more people we talk to, the more people join, and it keeps getting bigger. We started off with 20 people in India, and now we have covered India, Malaysia, parts of the U.S., and we are working with the U.K. Also, every volunteer who joins the 35 Akhree team will have their name published on the album. Project 35 Akhree is set to debut the album within the next few weeks, so look out for the release date, and be sure to donate to the cause on their website. http://www.35akhree.org Source - http://www.india.com/lifestyle/musical-project-set-to-release-1-million-copies-of-sikh-teachings-226395/

  25. Bangkok gets new Sikh centre Dec 20, 2014, Thailand Bangkok will get a new Sikh centre to complement the only gurdwara in the Thai capital after more than 100 years. The Guru Nanak Dharam Parchaar Center (GNDPC) will open its doors tomorrow (Sun, Dec 21, 2014). The centre, housed in a single storey purpose-build building, is located about half an hours drive from the Siri Guru Singh Sabha Gurdwara, until now the only gurdwara sahib in the city. The day will start tomorrow with a programme called Amritwela sach naw vadiyai vichar at 4am followed by the hoisting of the nishan sahib (Khalsa flag). The opening programme begins at 3pm with the recitation of Sukhmani Sahib followed by a nagar kirtan and a kirtan darbar, according to invites sent out. After over 100 years of only one Gurdwara Sahib in Bangkok, this is big, one Bangkok-based Sikh, who declined to be named, told Asia Samachar. The Siri Guru Singh Sabha Gurdwara, the backbone of the Sikh community in Thailand, began its journey in 1912 when the growing Sikh population in Bangkok rented a house. The growing population and the traffic situation has led to a segment of the Bangkok Sikh population to start considering tbe need to build another gurdwara sahib in Bangkok. Sikh population in Thailand is estimated around 50,000, with 40,000 of them in Bangkok. There are also many senior citizens living in the area of the new center. It will be easier for them to go to the Guru Ghar (gurdwara), said one volunteer at the center. The newly established centre will today elect its management team in a unique manner. Members prepared to serve will be asked to write their names on a paper which will then be folded and dropped into bowl. After an ardaas (prayer), five names will be picked at random and they will run the centre, according to one member. The opening and daily functioning of the GNDPC will be broadcast on channel RF 22, according to another update from the members of the center. Photos sent to Asia Samachar show center members busy making last minute preparation for the opening. Source - http://asiasamachar.com/2014/12/20/bangkok-gets-new-sikh-centre/
