Good question. I think being an amritdhari means u are taking sikhi as ur religion and the guru as ur Satguru. So that means from now on u must follow all the rehits and hukams. And have the same purpose as ur fellow sikhs. And before taking any step in ur life. Ask ur guru for aagiya and advice. Also as an amritdhari, we r not only saint soldiers or but also monk householders. Grihsti sinaas. Which means while we do live in this world and earn a living that should not be our goal. To become rich to spoil our kids should not be our aim. We should be like buddhist monks. Who eat what is given. Wear simple clothes. Try and practice to control the thoughts. And any free time spent in solitude, in meditation, to find the reality of this world. It has now become a fashion to wear big turbans and then makeup or fashionable outfits. When our turbans and our hair were supposed to set us apart. Supposed to remind us not to fit into the world. Not to try to enjoy the world. To remind us we have a different purpose. A higher purpose. The world is only to be used to fulfill our basic needs not to occupy our complete attention. Or we were supposed to be kingly rebels. Baagi Baadshah. Which means we must be unique. Not only in our appearance but our thoughts and actions as well. Baadshah as in chardi kala and carefree while the world stresses abt tests, exams, money matters. Baagi that we stand with those overlooked. Be religious as the world turns toward atheism and inward spirituality only. Or Servant Saviors. Or wise, wahegurus warriors. You have quite a mish mash there. It says in christianity and maybe other abrahamic faiths that God created humans in his image. Sikhi does not say this. Sikhi says God is formless, yet he is also all forms. As in all of creation is God. So how can we say only humans r in Gods image? All of creation is God yet God is also seperate from creation. And God is also the jyot or the life light in all. Or the soul in all.

Having watched the BBC report on alcohol being an issue in the UK Punjabi community, I came to a realization that Sikhs value Punjabiyat (Punjabi-ness) over their Hindu and Muslim counterparts and are for that reason suffering. Muslim Punjabi were willing to separate their state, their language and culture for their religion and did so. The Hindu Punjabis as well have distanced themselves from Punjabiyat, evidenced through their speaking of Hindi. Now Punjabiyat has its goods and bads, however as a whole, the culture is extremely destructive. And I think it was for a reason that Guru Nanak was born in a Punjabi community and not any other Indian community, as the culture needed saving, and Sikhi was just that. To be very honest, Punjabiyat and Sikhi are polar opposites. And unfortunately most "Sikhs" follow Punjabiyat over Sikhi. This is our fault. The ethnic identity of Punjab is actually quite recent, having only emerged fully in the 10th century. It was essentially a mixture of Jats, Khatris, Rajputs, Tarkhans, Brahmins, Sindhis, and Dalits that formed a new identity on the basis of language, and now ethnic. Before this, Punjab was home to Vedic teachings and essentially was a small cog in the mega-Vedic machine which encompassed Sapta Sindhu (NW India + Pakistan + Eastern Afghanistan). It's only a few hundred years older than our Sikh identity, and unlike the Sikh identity it was never truly defined up until recently. In fact, taking a look at the history of the Punjab region (when it was called Punjab and before that), there's not much to be proud of in fact. Yes, it was home to the oldest university of the world, Takshashila, a institution for Vedic teachings, however other than that, it was mostly defeat after defeat by invaders and cowardice until Sikhi. The first time after thousands of years of foreign rule, indigenous rule in Punjab was established only by Sikhs. What I'm trying to convey here is that as Sikhs, we need to learn from our fellow Muslim and Hindu counterparts and ease up on the Punjabi identity, and stress more importance on Sikhi. Greetings, I am new to Sikhism (about 4 months) of reading and practicing as best I can. One of the aspects I like a lot is the encouragement of family life. Up until this point, I had been a practicing Buddhist for the past ~11 years. Having recently had a child and starting a young family, the strong teaching of renunciation of family life is one of the things that made me turn away from Buddhism. For me, religion/philosophy/way of life, is about support to keep being a positive and good person no matter how challenging life can become. I think that having a family is difficult and Sikhism gives one support to get through tough times. In addition, I think life should be celebrated and having a family does that I think. I was curious as to what the main reasons behind the encouragement of family life are in Sikhism. I know it is encouraged, but haven't really come across the why. Thanks everyone. I don't think there are any basic geometric shapes that someone hasn't concocted some metaphysical meaning for. When engineering things, or building things, the shape of the thing is determined by the math, science, materials, means of construction, and asthetics. I wouldn't read too much into it, or you'll be left with no shapes from which to construct anything.

How to go eat at a bar ...rules?? Sikhi is not just abt rules or controlling every aspect of ur life. But in case u r genuine . There is no dating. We only have 2 martial states. Single or married. And the goal is to go from single to married without any hassle, without going out with a bunch of different ppl while u try them out to figure out wat u like wat u dont. Basically u look for a marriage partner. If ur parents or elders can help u fantastic. If they cant. Then u have to do all the hard work. Ive been taught there r 6 things that must match when getting married. 1. Age. Like no more than 5 year difference in my opinion. 2. Money status. If u grew up rich, u will have a hard time adjusting to living in a poor one. U wont know how to save or how to buy at thrift shops etc 3. Religion. 4. Health 5. Same language and culture 6. Ethnicity/nationality These 6 things plus watever things u might need. Then u have to find someone who fits this criteria. And then approach them and ask them to consider u for marriage.. See why having an elder person helps? If they agree to consider u for marriage. Then and only then can u meet up at public places or talk on social media. Its like u guys r engaged. After a few meetings. I would say 3. You guys decide if u guys r compatible. Then either a yes or no for marriage is given. Most western ppl worry abt love. And then spend their 20s 30s looking for the perfect one or the true love. Theres no such thing. Then in 35s they marry anyone who is left as they r running out of time.To be able to have a good marriage, u just need to get along. I mean u lived with ur parents and siblings without choosing them. And u manage. Both of u need to be responsible, mature adults with similar goals and values and u will have a nice marriage.

I said "people." I never alluded to their nationality or ethnicity. My next door neighbours are a family of Nigerian Christians. Most kindest and warmest people I've ever known. They've shown me more love than any Sikh ever has. There's savages in all races. In this particular context, there's a hathi in the room not many are eager to discuss, which is ironic considering there's many, many black nationalities and ethnicities who have no problem calling a spade a spade. That's all true. However... Your full time job is Simran, and "work" is just one of the places you are, part of the time. No matter where you work it's going to take time. Keep it up. Die while still alive and cross the world ocean. Anything is fine in your path just don't hide from the world entirely.

It doesmt have to be a totalitarian method but an egalitarian one. Worl with your parents if they’re understanding. And the criteria are the ones bhaji outlined above

It's good that you're asking. It's obvious that you must not have any proper grounding in Sikh history, otherwise you would not wonder how people get married in the Sikh panth. By the way, are you a Sikh? If so, it's strange that you're asking how you're supposed to get married without dating. You get married in the same way your parents got married, or their parents. The Gurmat way of getting married is when you're old enough to marry, they find someone suitable, and you get married. There are variations on that, you'll likely want to meet and talk with the prospective marriage partner, and so on, but that's basically it. By "suitable" I mean someone who, in your parents estimation and experience, is someone who is responsible, educated, employed, and also attractive. And from a good family with a good reputation. Plus who follows Gurmat (to whatever extent that you do). I.e., if you're amritdhari, he/she should be amritdhari. Or keshadhari/keshadhari. Or mona Sikh/mona Sikh. If you have all of those items checked, it's very likely the marriage will succeed. If you're missing one of those, the marriage will very likely fail. "Love marriages" are usually missing one of those items. Sitting around in a bar hitting on girls is not the Gurmat way of getting married. I don't have time to do a huge writeup right now, but suffice to say that someone who starts his journey towards marriage by flirting with any pretty young thing that walks past him is also someone who will have a wandering eye after marriage. Secondly, the dating culture automatically leads to an arms race of sexualizing young women as they try to use lower and lower necklines, higher and higher hemlines, and tighter and tighter clothes to attract the attention of potential dating mates. Finally, we're called to treat women as mothers, sisters, and daughters, which is the furthest thing from the mindset of a dater, someone who's on the prowl. The Gurmat way of marriage is simply the way that our Gurus got married, the way they spent 200 years on this earth teaching us how to live like Gurmukhs. Note: this does not mean you have to marry someone who wears a chola with a 1 ft dumalla turban. If you're lax in Sikhi observance, that's fine, just have your parents find someone who is at the same level as you.

Learn Shaster vidya, that's all I can say. Learn Martial arts, anything. Just take precautions. That was the order of Mahakaal and that's the only way we'll reach anywhere. Sri Guru Nanak dev ji did not encourage family life. Guru Nanak dev ji showed through family life a soul can merge with Vaheguru. People were teaching by being a householder you can't merge with God. This belief was rejected by Sri Guru Nanak dev ji. You are a lucky soul to be able to come to the only Guru who can carry you across to Vaheguru.
