Youll find sikhs arent the only ones who dont drink or r veggies lol. Its a personal choice many make. Has very little impact on anything. Stick with the right crowds and youl enjoy uni whilst keeping rehat. I made plenty of friends, there wasnt a single singh on my course and iv never been clubbing or pubs or none of that. be confident in yourself. Enjoy life as HSingh said. You're a Singh. You're an ambassador of our nation. Dont be seen in places we dont belong to. Dont be doing things we shouldnt. Uni is a time where you either stay on your tracks or go way off. Concentrate on your studies. Make friends. Join a few societies. Boom! Fun all round

One needs to be seriously honest with themselves, if one truly feels in experience worldly things are illusion and feel nirlaip like lotus in muddy water then in my opinion go for it -don't hold back- mingle with outside crowd which does not have same interest as you but if you are type of person who are quite driven by outside five senses(engage in it, fail to witness them ignore them) than i suggest you avoid it keep engaging in more sangat, gurbani vichar with effort until vichar becomes effortless and you are automatically drawn towards vichar, bairaag regardless of outside situation then at that point, outside places or worldy influences will lose its power grip on you.

I found that Sikhs are by and large quite respected in Canada. Surrey is a large in itself of almost half million people so you cannot really claim that the whole of Surrey as a ghetto. The wider white Canadian community is quite aware of Sikhs and our traditions in a way that the Brits are not. Being greeted with Sat Sri Akal by a white cashier or being told by Security that your "Kara" may need to be taken off when going through metal detectors. A white salesman would approach a Sikh customer before even going to a white customer because he knows who has the money. That would not happen in the UK. All the recent hoo-ha in Canada at the moment is being created by muslims, whether it is the Ottawa shootings or the Calgary-ISIS connections or whether it is the bomb suspects in Toronto or grooming incidents in Quebec.

The 15 member committee elected 5 members and Avtar Makkar was named as head of the management committee unanimously. The SGPC enjoys control over majority of Gurdwaras in Punjab, Chandigarh and Himachal Pardesh. Now with the control of Takht Sri Patna Sahib, it can make decisions regarding 4 of the 5 takhts. The fifth takht, Sri Hazoor Sahib, is run independently of SGPC control. SGPC President was congratulated by DSGMC President Manjit Singh GK. Some scholars have hinted that Makkar had been made head at Takht Sri Patna Sahib to empty the president’s position at SGPC headquarters in Sri Amritsar. Salwinder Singh (Tata Nagar) became senior vice president, Bibi Kamaljeet Kaur got elected as junior vice president, Sarjinder Singh (Patna Sahib) was made general secretary and Mahinder Singh Chhabra as secretary. Manak did convert to Sikhi. He married his daughters in Sikh families. He was not a Khalsa and did drink but he did have love for Sikhi. The burial was not due to his personal wish but more because of difficult (economical) situations around the time of his death.

'Jatt' and 'Ramgharia' are not castes. The term Jatt simply describes the amalgamation of rural peoples who existed outside the caste system of the Hindus and were animated by some sort of tribal nationalism rather than caste loyalties. It is an ethnic group. Likewise, a Ramgharia is a descendant of a member of the Ramgharia misl. Most Ramgharias happen to be Tarkhans, but they don't have to be. Perhaps a more learned member of the Sangat could clarify why exactly these two groups appear to have become known as castes when in fact they aren't? My digression aside, a Jatt Sikh should still be allowed to marry a Ramgharia Sikh.

Jagsaw I would dispute that survey, would be interesting to see the sample size and what their particular agenda is, that is not my experience.Nor is that necessarily the experience of a lot of other Sikhs who reside in Canada. I am aware of the reputation of Surrey amongst Canadians but it Surrey is a big place and it is quite sprawly. Some of these "reputations" are built on perception. It's like saying all folk in Norfolk have webbed feet and hands. There are some thing Canadian Sikhs do that I personally find irritating but they also do some things much better than UK Sikhs. This Khem Bedi that was Amitabh's ancestor was notoriously very anti-Sikh. Khem Bedi hated Giani Ditt Singh + the (Lahore) Singh Sabha with a passion as they were revitalising the Sikh Panth. Khem Bedi had his own competing Sanatan Sabha which claimed Sikhs were Hindu's. Khem Bedi was paid large sums by the British to undermine the Gurdwara Sudhar Lehar and the true Singh Sabha movement. The Arya Samaj and British paid him handsomely to strenghten anti-Gurmat practices in the Gurdwaras led by the Hindu Mahants. Wherever he went he used to openly preach that Sikhs were Hindus. He used verses from Bachittar Natak to force ordinary Sikhs (that only believed in accepting Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji Maharaj) to think that the Gurus were descendents of Hindu King Ram Chandra's children as Bedi's + Sodhi's. He claimed that the Aad Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji is the fifth veda of the Hindus + that Sikhs should revere the Vedas of the Hindu's as, according to him, our Guru Sahiban did so in their previous lives, as stated in the Bachittar Natak. He was widely disliked by the Sikh Panth, but on the back of the finances from the British and his wealthy Arya Samaj friends, he set up a Sodhak Committee in 1897 of his hand picked people, to consolidate 32 wildly different versions of the Bachittar Natak which had been introduced into Punjab from Bengal via Hindu Mahants to whom the British supplied drugs like opium and prostitutes between 1875 and 1900. It was Khem Bedi who personally decided that Benti Chaupai was best positioned next to Triya Charitar on the advice of Arya Samaj friends. Khem Bedi's two sons Kartar and Gurbaksh also merit mention as they were staunch opponents of Bhai Kartar Singh Jhabbar, Jathedar Tehal Singh and Bhai Lachman Singh who sought to liberate Sri Nankana Sahib from Hindu Mahants who were introducing prostitutes and other anti-Gurmat practices into our Gurdwara's just like how the Muslim Massa Ranghar had done in earlier times. Kartar Bedi was a staunch supporter of the Hindu Mahant Narain Das who murdered 130 Sikhs at Sri Nankana Sahib in 1921. Gurbaksh Bedi was famously anti-Sikh + used to go on Hindu stages to declare that Sikhs are Hindus. Compared to these individuals Amitabh seems more "Sikh" for at least trying to clear his name at Sri Akal Takht Sahib.

Now cricket is played in the villages. But until 90s, this game was mainly played by the city folks since Cricket is not a very athletic sport so one does not need to be that physical strong to play this sport. Back then it was field hockey which dominated the villages because boys from the villages had good diet and were physically stronger and more athletic. In Doaba it was football.
