  1. At some point during the last century, humans have decided that in order to be happy, we have to work our off not because we need to provide for our families, but because we need to buy the best newest stuff. The newest phone, the newest car, the biggest house etc.. Lately, a German intern died after 72 hours of no sleep because he's working at an investment bank and is willing to sacrifice what it takes, even his life, so that he secures his 'future' of endless stream of buying stuff that will define who he is. That's basically our lives nowadays, we work not because we need to fulfill a certain adequate of standard of living for those we care about, we work so that we buy stuff and spend what we earn on going to fancy restaurants and clubs. And the problem is the buying never stops, you will keep spending your money on stuff that will in the end consume you instead of you consuming them Farida Roti meri kaath kee , laavan meri bukh jere Khange chopriya , ghane sehenge dukh ... You can say that each person lives his own life, and I can't say that's wrong for a person to work all day just so that he buys the newest car, but the problem with this hyper-consumption is that if it's sustained, it will be the end of humanity. Imagine if all the Indians and the Chinese (and not just a small subsection of them) can afford to live the same lifestyle the Westerners do. Also, just look at pictures of Beijing and Shanghai, see the blinding fogs they have there. It's not because of THEIR aggressive manufacturing it's because of OUR aggressive consumption. Nobody stops to think that his designer clothes is made by the hands of small children working in the most dangerous environments that significantly contribute to the world's pollution levels. That's the biggest threat to humanity as a whole and to us as individuals. We forgot about human happiness, instead we are willing to work half our day so that we can make payments to our houses and cars and when you finish paying you realize you're a disease-ridden old man and that your life is already over. And I am not saying I am not implicated in this or I won't be even more implicated in the future, I am just complaining that we have become passive consumerists

  2. Life is about being not doing. Its about what you are being when you are doing something? You could be doing anything but are you being anxious, arrogant, selfish , loving, compassionate...... What you are being is what you feel . Ironically we call ourself human being not human doing. Sikhism per my understanding is about being. You can have all the riches and comfort but you should always have your priorities in order. Knowing as Guru Teg Bahadur says in most of his vairag sabads life is an illusion, nothing you see is real. Its just what you think you are in reference to something. Its like we give importance to things based on our priorities. Based on our minds We are making it all up.

  3. Veer barinder singh you can not be more misinformed , you know jover 80% of fertile land in North America is used for crops that directly go into feeding factory farm live stock - the crops are soy and corn We will employ much less farm workers if the world went vegan ...also will leave lots of forests uncut and be able to reslove food hunger Also you can wash off fertilizers but what do you do with all the growth hormones , antibiotics and steroids that are in dairy and meat ? Roza thare Manave Allho Svadat jee Sanghare Aapa dekh avar nahi dekhe , kahe ko jakh mare You observe religious fasting yet you butcher beings to satiate your taste buds You are concerned about self and not others, why engage in meaningless activities

  4. Alot of the elders in the gurdwara's are not willing to allow the youth to do alot of the sewa. I have even personally been spoken rudely to by elders over issues that don't really matter, like one time I took an extra napkin, and the elder baba asked me what I was doing? These are the types of things that youth are discouraged to going to the gurdwara more often. Also I find the katha vachaks that speak punjabi are often very hard to understand and I am very fluent in punjabi, the youth would never understand what they are saying clearly. For the youth I think we often making sikhi hard to approach, which it really shouldn't be!

  5. Wow, be it; castes, jathas, regions, dialects, or goaths, as a community we will always find something to degrade each other about. i can't believe I am reading Singhs insulting each other about their areas. In fact not even their own areas but the areas of their parents/grand-parents. If its that great then rather than argue to death about how its better than any other area, move back! I really don't understand what it is about Punjabis that makes us resist ekta at all costs. It's all about one-upmanship with us. I guess Guroo Jee told us to consider Anandpur Sahib our pind just for fun.

  6. I just know that caste system is not part of Sikhi and should never be given importance. It is very shameful that Sikhs prefer caste system and feel proud of their caste esp, the Sikhs who live in India are filled with haumai of their caste. It hurts more when it comes from Amrritdharis. I have seen many inter-caste marriages, including mine, and many inter racial marriages which are as successful as any marriage within caste. Young Amritdharis should step up to their parents and tell them that they don't care about caste. This step might be rebellious and hard but it will be bliss for future of Sikhi. I find this is the most effective way to tackle this problem.

  10. Gurdwaras should have English Katha along with Punjabi Katha so that children can understand what is being said. Give chance to young Katha wachak fluent in English and Punjabi to do katha. Social media is a great place. Gurdwara management should also connect with sangat on social media and keep them updated and involved.

  11. My ustad has told me amrit vela riaz is a must. Focus on low key riaz in the mornings because if you can do low really well, high won't be a problem. Drink hot water, avoid drinking drinks that dry your throat. Sing from the stomach, it's powerful and sounds confident.

  14. What’s with attributing laws and dogma to everything? Is this not dogmatic and ritualistic? Something Sikhi preaches against! Sikhi isn't about do's and don'ts. How is eating going to affect bani in the slightest? The same bani that calls out the Brahmins and priests who claimed they were pure, by doing rituals and holding certain beliefs. Of course eating is fine, prashad is given from next to the SGGS palanquin, langar is prepared and eaten while bani is read.

  15. I totally agree with you on how much youth lack knowledge of Sikhi. You must not forget so many Sikh parents have very little knowledge too due to them misusing their time at gurdwara rather than not learning anything. It's time to reach out to Sikh parents to start taking their faith seriously. Now to inspire the youth you have to motivate them to make their Sikhi faith stronger so giving them countless history lessons will really be a eye-opener for some. A lot of Sikh teenagers are more into the martial art of Sikhi. Using social media to spread Sikhi awareness to the youth can be a big part in the future whether in the music industry or movie industry. Sikh teenagers are being seduced by all the new western culture stuff so it is a must to teach youngsters what Sikhi is all about. It is sad today I see a lot of keshdhari grandfathers with mona grandson or granddaughter it shows you that if we are losing our Sikhi identity then we are headed to a rough path. In 30 years I see a rough future but if Sikh Youth stand up and want to change things around for example more camps and classes or fixing how gurdwaras run then I can see hope.

  16. WJKK WJKF, I think what has been lost in this topic is worship and praising are two very different things. I believe that the raw power of Durga mata is always in support of the khalsa whenever it is needed, waheguru is the viewer to whatever is being played out and the creator of both sukh and right, there always has to be to opposing sides for warfare, but both are the creation of waheguru. The worship of anyone other than waheguru is condemned, however praise of ones actions are not, whatever form of creation being human or another extra terrestrial race. It is evident in both gurbani and Sri Dasam Granth, praise and critism are given to the devte and devia, as again they had imperfections. The analogies of the devia being the sweepers of waheguru demonstrate that such a high knowledgeable creation of waheguru, with much more intellect than ours is simply compared to a humble sweeper of waheguru. It is to demonstrate the greatness of the almighty in contrast to something which is much more greater than us. It is only a gurmukh who is void of the normal process after death set by the laws of dharma, hence why dharam raj and his jam dhoot have no jurisdiction over a true gurmukh. WJKK WJKF

  21. fathe ji, Kirtaniyae are always learning throughout their lives, it is impossible to learn everything in a life time. I have been learning keertan for a few years and ustaad ji always makes sure riyaz is being done. at least half an hour of riyaz a day should be done. Start with doing your sargams slowly and then use the mandar and tar scale also. Then start sing patterns. After a while start using different speeds. DO NOT use a vaja/harmonium when doing riyaz it hinders our voice. Sing with just a tanpura only touch vaja keys briefly every now and then if you are unsure you have hit the sur. Once you have done the shudh scales, start with the scales of a raag depending on time of day, e.g. bhairav in morning, yaman kalyaan in the evening etc. use different raags everyday or every two days to help improve your voice further.
