SECOND SIKH LORD MAYOR IS SWORN IN More News | Back to home page 11:32 - 21 May 2004 Leicester's 546th Lord Mayor was sworn in wearing a ceremonial black turban last night. Labour councillor Piara Clair became Leicester's second Sikh Lord Mayor during the annual mayor-making ceremony at Leicester town hall. Coun Clair was due to become deputy Lord Mayor, but was catapulted into the top job after Lord Mayor-elect Councillor Jean Middleton stood down this week due to illness. In his acceptance speech, Coun Clair said he was wearing a black turban to honour his father. He will name his mayoral charity appeal next week, but hoped part of it would fund a hospital …

Here's what I found at http://joongangdaily.joins.com/200405/21/2...0090809081.html We often mistake a big, glaring-eyed giant wearing a turban as a typical Indian. But the villain in the 007 series is in fact a Sikh. They make up only 2 percent of the 1 billion population of India. India is a melting pot of religion, and the Hindus, 80 percent of the population, do not wear turbans. In spite of their small numbers, the minority Sikhs came to be known as typical Indians because of their unique appearance and strong personalities, which leave a vivid impression. Sikhism is a unique religion. "Sikh" means a pupil or disciple in an ancient Indian language. Sikhism emerge…

Waheguroo Jee Ka Khalsa! Waheguroo Jee Kee Fateh!! There is this guy in my office who travels places to 'preach' his religion... I have had a couple of 'discussions' with him in the past. He's tried to heckle me in the past on the basis of religion. He asked me today "What exactly is that YOUR religion believes in?", and I told him point blank "We believe in quality and not quantity!". He was dumbstruck for a moment to say anything Then I told him how 'his' religion had bought people over to convert them back in India. I also gave him a piece of my mind about how his religion had launched crusades and done more for destroying peace in the world. I said religion is goo…

Will some Malaysian Singh/Singhnee put my mind at ease. Do they serve meat for Langar at some Malaysian Gurdwaras??? It's just I had a discussion a couple a weeks ago with my uncle (who's not much of a Sikh) who claimed this as he had just been to Penang. I accused him of making it up as no Gurdwara would ever serve meat. I am pretty shocked if this happens.

Sat Sri Akal! As you are probably aware, the Congress Party has given tickets to both Sajjan Kumar and Jagdish Tytler. These goons were responsible for thousands of Sikh deaths in Delhi after Indira Gandhi's assasination. Instead of being executed or put behind bars, these murderers are running for office. Since the Indian judicial system has failed us Sikhs badly, lets appeal to the United Nations. Here is the link to a petition against Sajjan Kumar and Jagdish Tytler:www.petitiononline.com/sikh1699/petition.html Please sign it and get as many people to sign it as possible. It will be sent to the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights as well as members of the EU …

Congress wants to bury stigma of 1984 carnage NEW DELHI: By nominating a Sikh to be India’s prime minister for the first time, the Congress Party is trying to remove a stain caused by a pogrom that left over 2,000 Sikhs dead after the 1984 assassination of Indira Gandhi, survivors said. School teacher Avinash Singh, wearing a brown turban and sporting a flowing beard as required by his religion, was one of the victims of the five-day anti-Sikh riots that followed the Gandhi’s murder by her Sikh bodyguards. “I was in Calcutta when a crowd attacked me with sticks and I was injured on the head,” said the 48-year-old Singh, a resident of New Delhi. “Initially I did not kn…

"The turban stands out," says 70-year-old Malkit Singh Sall, wondering how India's new prime minister, a fellow Sikh, will fare when he meets other heads of state. Southall election poster: A new British Sikh identity is taking shape "I'm glad they made him leader," he says, stepping onto the wet streets of Southall, where the smell of spicy food mingles with the beat of bhangra music. Events in India have always resonated in this corner of west London, home to Britain's Sikh community for over 50 years. Southall election poster: A new British Sikh identity is taking shape Twenty years ago, there was outrage when India's then-leader, Indira Gandhi, sent army co…

Merian rangian rangayi urreh gayia ve, teri pag de naal dian chunnian. It was the heartrending cry of a widow after 1984, who felt her dupattas that matched her husband's turbans had become forlorn; couples often matched the turban with the dupatta. - Jastwant Deed Do you guys know any couple who does that? I seem to remember who did that.
